Furthur last weekend, The Black Eyed Peas on Friday
I've got BEP in March, could you shoot me some specs on how it went shooting for them? Were they stage-side or soundboard approvals? Anything weird beyond the 3-song? How's the lighting? Etc.

EoDM is Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme (and other random people)...it grew out of the Dessert Sessions I believe.

EoDM is Jesse's vehicle - Josh Homme does collaborate a bit with them but he isn't part of the touring band. Just a great fun rock n roll band. I shot Jesse solo in a small bar on Thursday night. Good fun.

It's 2 1/2 songs of the Peas and you can shoot the first three of LMFAO and Ludacris. I started at the foot of the stage then went to the end of the catwalk. Lots of light and lots of ability to move around for the shots you want.

2.5 songs? that's pretty arbitrary. did security have a stopwatch?

looked like loads of light, though. also looked like a fun show to shoot, as long as my earplugs were jammed in far enough.

We were told 2.5 songs was what the tour manager requested, and midway through the second song he tapped me on the shoulder. Togs on the other side of the stage probably got to finish that song, but I was closest to the exit at that point and was pulled out first. I was at f7.1 for some of it!

I have Boyz II Men Thursday. At my venue, I am the guy who has to drag the other togs away. My two regulars are easy ... I just tell them the rules and it's done. But there are the occasional togs who just want to shoot and shoot and will keep shooting as I have security drag them away! They get a warning and if they do it again, they don't get back in for future events. I don't make up the rules but I damn sure enforce them since not doing so will have adverse impacts on what I will be allowed to do in the future. FYI: for 99% of the concerts I shoot under the same restrictions as the media people. Interesting note: the security (we don't have any of those hefty guys in "Security" shirts ... we have guys in suits with guns!) guys default rule is that when I stop shooting, everybody stops shooting. LOL. But sometimes the shooters know to "hide" and I have to intervene. Not often ... maybe once or twice a year.

great set of shows, certainly up my alley.

the 1st Boston show for the Shjips had lighting so bad i kept my camera in my bag, and didn't want to bother them w/ flash.

Pavement is gonna be playing a freakin' basketball arena here...weird! i first saw them (the only time i saw them) was their first east coast tour, and they played the upstairs @ the Middle East, capacity then of about 100 (they've since moved the tables out).

Coincidentally I shot former Drive By Trucker Jason Isbell playing solo on Saturday (and also joining Justin Townes Earle on stage for a few songs) - very impressive songwrite/performer.

Not surprising you didn't know any other acts on the bill as they are Australian acts that probably aren't known outside these shores. The Break are in instrumental surf-rock band comprising three members of Midnight Oil and Brian Ritchie from The Violent Femmes - they were pretty damned fine.

How's the restrictions? I was originally going to be shooting both the shows in NJ full access for the LD's portfolio than just before the tour he was let go. Tweedy has a history of changing things with crew and other and it wasn't because of poor work. No moss on that stone.

i am assuming it's the standard 1st three. i wasn't trying to set up anything special. the show is in a seated theater w/ no photo pit, but you can shoot from the 3 aisles and the balconies.

tweedy (i'm assuming it came from him) just changed the Wilco camera policy, and fans can no longer use their P&S cameras during the concert, or risk ejection. i think the vid captures were really irking him, and it's probably more enforceable to just do away w/ all cameras, even cell phones.

Yeah, I don't mind the people that take an occasional photo during the show, but when half the crowd is holding their cameras over their heads recording the whole show it really ruins it for everyone else.

Perhaps you can use one of those fold up poly step ups that I use when people are in front of me, Tim. I found mine at Ace Hardware and while it is only a small one step up platform, it's cheap (under $10) and easy to carry. I picked up one after I saw an AP shooter with one. Why is it all the other 'togs are tall???

narlus
8th of April 2010 (Thu), 10:01
i could have used one last night...not the best shoot. on the drive up i discovered an 'Error 20' code on my 5D2...argh. wouldn't clear regardless of what i tried.

i get to the venue, get my pass and tickets no problem, grab a bite w/ my wife and friend, then head over to the venue. nice small theater, but restrictions are back of the room. damn. i inquire a bit more...balcony shooting is ok. the main security guy is on the radio w/ someone, and then says something like 'not up front' and heads off to deal w/ something else. i put 1+1 together, find him again downstairs, and ask if that means that shooting from the far left and right wings is ok. he says 'you're a professional, you know what you're doing.'

so that's good. however, as I made my way down the wing, closer to the stage, the floor slope flattened, and that's where i could have used a step stool...i'm only 5'8" and trying to shoot over standing patrons meant trying to find the holes between the heads. ah well.

on the plus side, my 5D2 became sporadically operational, and i was able to get some shots in between the Err 20 appearances. on the minus side, the 2nd song for Wilco was darkness...they had a great light show for the rest of the concert; this is a band where being able to shoot the whole show would be great, as i didn't get any decent shots of Nels wigging out, or any decent ones of Glen...i was really tempted to break out the camera for the beginning part of 'I'm The Man Who Loves You' when he stands on the kit, arms out-stretched in a triumphant pose, w/ large shadows cast on either side...it's an impressive scene, but i stayed true to the shooting restrictions.

last night they 'only' played 35 songs...probably about 50% overlap. great live band, highly recommended.

Wow. For the past bunch of years the Cowboy Junkies didn't allow any photography at all at their shows. Still some of the nicest people in the business though. Margo is a doll. I spent a bit of time with her son on the bus behind the Beacon Theatre playing peek-a-boo a few years back.

Excellent! There are tons of good angles and with a photo pass you can get into the VIP balcony areas. Lighting was decent although the musicians on the sides weren't well-lit, but that could have been the band rather than the venue. No pit, but it wasn't necessary for this show. Beautiful theater, unchanged since the Roxy days.

In the end didn't shoot Orianthi either (no one had arranged permission with her US based management for photographers and noone on the ground could give permission - what's wrong with asking the artist?)

i never saw PiL, nor the 'filthy lucre' tour that the Sex Pistols did (which i heard was surprisingly great). i don't have a lot of confidence for a great show, but i'm hoping for the best. and i got approved for Exene/John Doe for tonight :D

I am shooting The English Beat tonight. Really it is Dave Wakeling with a new backing band. Dave also fronted General Public.

I never flash at shows but I may tonight. I may just prop a 430 on a stand, gel it and trigger it wirelessly. Flash is allowed and this venue is small and not well lit and whatever lighting they have is boring.

bummer you didn't get approved for Wilco. the two shows i saw a few weeks ago were unreal.

I never even heard back from PIL, which means I didn't contact the right person. It would be interesting to shoot them.

i just used the info off their contact page:

unfortunately Levene and Wobble aren't in the lineup, but Lu Edmonds (played w/ the Damned) is on bass.

Most of the releases that I have seen like that only allow use for the publication and often with a timeline (6 months or other) and do not allow use on a personal site. Read the fine print.

there is no fine print. the one i received is not too official.

here is what it says...

These photographs are to be used only in conjunction with editorial coverage in. They cannot be used for any other purpose without prior, written consent

i never thought posting them on my website would be a big deal, but i guess so. i can always just link to them.

Yeah. It looks like posting them on a personal web page is not an allowed use. It is getting worse and worse out there. I've been lucky but I have walked away from a few gigs rather than sign releases like that.

never mind the Buzzcocks...how was Pearl Jam? Any tips you want to throw my way?

I just got a 70-200 2.8L IS II. Perfect timing. Sticking that on my 5D and my 16-35 will likely be on my 40D. Either that or the 790-2 on the 40D and 24-70 on the 5D.

Lot of photographers covering it? Lighting was good I assume?

dude, the old Brits stomped all over the PJ performance; granted i only saw the 1st three PJ songs but can't say i've ever been a fan.

1st song = zero lights. don't even worry about taking photos
2 & 3 songs = very good light.

you can't cross the pink line of VEDDER DEATH in the pit, so you have to pick a side and stay there. the popular choice was on McCready's side but i went to Gossard's end since there were less shooters. either way i don't think it matters much since most of the shots were centered around Eddie.

Do explain this pink line.

it's just two lines of tape, marking out a DO NOT ENTER zone in the middle of the photo pit. we had to pick a side, and couldn't cross it between songs. security was banned from this zone as well.

same thing that the Pretenders/Cat Power show did, though we could move between songs. same color tape, too, ironically.

actually, it didn't matter much since shooting dead-on center isn't very interesting, and there were only 3 other shooters on my side. the other side probably had about 8 shooters in total.

You nailed it. First song was dark with a little red light. 2nd and 3rd varied with some good light and great light.

Last night was the first time my height had an impact on me shooting. I am 5' 6" and that stage was about 6' high.

The 2 songs went quick, they escorted us out and gave me some pretty good seqats to watch the show.

Odd that the waiver said first 3 songs but the crowd was allowed to bring in "any camera of any size". I shot from my seat but obviously can't use them for my publication.

it was just a rep from the Prudential Center. There were 6 photographers there. 3 I spoke with. 1 was a guy who has a day job at the prudential Center and just gets passes to shoot shows.

There were no physical passes. They just walked us in and out. i got there when the opener went on and they asked if I wanted to shoot them. I filled out the waiver and they walked me up front. I didn't even read it so I have no clue what it said. One of my best shots of the night was the opener though.

The email sent out by the Pru Center yesterday said any camera of any size was allowed in. Seems weird they would allow this but not allow publications to shoot from their seats.

in the future, it's probably in your best interest to read these so you know that you are signing away your images for free...a few days beforehand i attempted to negotiate that clause away but was unsuccessful, so i didn't bother shooting. the more these contracts just get signed perfunctorily w/o any push back from photographers, the more likely this will be the next '1st 3 no flash' standard...please do your part to prevent this.

i used a 1.4TC on my 70-200 and really could have done w/ a 400. rich, not sure you saw him but there was a guy shooting Nikon who shot the whole show; i saw him up on the right where i was sitting for a while (i don't think he could get up close, but could definitely move around). i forget his name but he's been at each Neil show i've shot, and is apparently friends w/ Neil from back in the day. pays to have connections :D
