I was trading some emails with good "OLD" Dwight and we happen to share who we are shooting tonight.
So I thought it might be fun to start a thread with who you are snapping this weekend.
For me I'm shooting Charlie Robison @ the famous Billy Bob's Texas in Ft. Worth.

No concert shoots for me this weekend.
Instead, I'm taking out the Bigma to shoot some birds.
I was gonna' take the Mossberg to shoot birds, but I'll be within city limits, so...

I'm not shooting concerts at the local venue this weekend...and it's uncertain what the camera restrictions will be yet for next weekend...
Deer hunting season is still on through the 9th here in PA...so I'm not stepping out for birding...besides it's around 20 degrees outside...It will be 50 degrees again in a few days...
I might post some previous shots instead, that a local INTERNET web radio station uses in their 24/7 slide show...some are on CD of my Canon 35mm SLR, still gotta find them...
Enjoy...

i've got two shoots this weekend (already done two since tues night...damn i should get to bed early tonight!).
sat is an incredible bill of two acoustic guitar masters. Peter Walker and Jack Rose. i shot Jack this summer and he was amazing, but having Peter Walker (60's contemporary of people like Fahey, Renbourn, Jansch, etc) is gonna be great.
sun night is the Pernice Brothers. in a perfect world, joe pernice would rule the radio waves; totally great AM radio pop fodder. really distinictive lyrics and very solid song structure. looking forward to both shows.

Well, taygull brought it up! I am shooting a Toys for Tots benefit tonight (for which I will be paid). The performers are all up and coming country singer/songwriters. Jimmy Wayne about whom I don't know much. Taylor Swift, who I think is 16 and for whom taygull has instructed me to bring home a CD inscribed, "All My Love Forever to You, Chris". I have shot and posted of her here earlier this year. And Danielle Peck, who my whole family loves ... she's got a bunch of incredible tunes out now but I like the one with the phrase, "Jesus loves you ... I don't!" She's on MySpace, as it Taylor Swift and probably Jimmy. These folks aren't as popular here at POTN as the Hip-Hop "Legends" that Steve Parr loves so much and Rockers, but some of us enjoy them.

This weekend I'm scouting the location for *next* weekend's shoot: I'm taking portraits of over 200 kids and adults performing in Ballet Minnesota's Classic Nutcracker. Unfortunately, no performance photos, though :( . The director is very possessive of his art and doesn't allow *any* performance photos, except for the one's he takes. His ballet, his rules.

I shot a two-group a cappella concert tonight. I'll be shooting a wedding for most of the day, followed by another two-group a cappella concert Saturday. Sunday morning I'll shoot my photos for my end-of-the-semester art history project; Sunday evening I'll probably wrap up my Photo 200 project.

I'll be shooting the Trans-Siberian Orchestra this afternoon. They are playing two sold out shows here today.
Tell me Dwight, how is the 300 2.8 handheld? I've got two songs, and I'm looking to put my new Tamron 17-50 2.8 on the tripod for full stage shots shooting it with the remote cable, while handholding the 300.

I might head to Albany NY to see them a couple days before christmas but it would be about a 6 hour drive each way. Can't wait to see some of your pics. I have all 4 cd's and their DVD.

They are absolutely phenomenal live. I saw and shot their show last year, and I was in complete awe. I've yet to see another show that compares with the spectacle that is TSO. Here are some shots from last year. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=116445) I hope to do as well again today.

The 300mm f/2.8L IS is my favorite lens and I always handhold now that I have a 400mm f/2.8L IS that sits on my full Wimberley Head tripod setup. I do have a lot of light at the casino but as for weight or the ability to handhold steady enough I don't find it to be a problem ... subject movement is much more of an issue. I used it a lot last night but with my power out all morning I have just downloaded the 2300 images and haven't even looked at them yet! Another way to put is that I always start my concerts with 300mm f/2.8L IS on one body and 300mm f/2.8L IS on the other. Part of the reason this works for me even for one or two songs is that I can get the whole stage with the 70mm FL from just in front of the lightboard ... so I shoot both bodies "down front" from the sides and when I feel the time constraint closing in I was backwards up the center isle to the lightboard shooting the whole time. Also, you can go to my website and look at the closeups and check the EXIF to see what I get ... I don't have time to give you URLs right now.

After last weekend shooting something like 25 bands over three days at the Meredith Festival this weekend will be much quieter. A rehearsal/recording studio has asked me to shoot their Christmas party on Sunday afternoon night. They have a stellar line up of well known (and not so well known) Australian musicians and are going to fill me with food and booze as well as keep me entertained. It should be a lot of fun.

Why, they won't allow cameras in?
You know you'll regret it...After a couple of songs you'll be climbing the walls for a camera...
At my local venue:
I'm hoping for this Saturday's "show sheet," to OK cameras for Sha Na Na...This is a Christmas show and it will be full of Oldies but goodies...So I won't know till Saturday morn...

well i did check the FAQ @ the venue, and they said it was generally prohibited, but to check on the day of the show.
Can I bring a camera or audio/video recording equipment?
Most performers do not allow duplication of their performances, so cameras and audio and video recording devices are strictly prohibited. For information regarding a specific event, call the box office at (617) 747-2261 on the day of the show.
i have no idea where our seats are (a friend organized this), but i probably wouldn't have a long enough lens anyway (my 70-200 is the f/4 version, so my longest fast lens is the 85).

Good idea Taygull...It might not be too late for Dwight to ask them for a small box ad, in return for the donation...
At least for now, chances are pretty good that his logo and Trade Information will be included with the featured photos...
Why not a feature interview with Dwight for his efforts?
What if he doesn't want any additional tasks for now? Maybe he'll need some perspective leads at a later time...

Yes but come on, you need to do like the lawyers do and get paid for creating the same document every time someone else uses it.
Make sure you post a link to the article! That is a pretty good deal.

Use fast glass (you have plenty), no flash, and since you are shooting a house concert pay attention to your shutter noise. House concerts can be difficult because it is usually very quiet.
Just make sure you move around so you are not bothering the same person all the time.

Fast glass, don't shoot directly into lighting, try to read the song to see when someone may be still, get the whole guitar, no "mic in the face" pictures and if you're shooting at 60ms or slower, plan on a lot not turning out. :) Oh, FEL is your friend and CWB may be too!

I think this thread would make a good sticky so regulars here can keep each other informed about what they are up to.

Sounds like a GREAT shooting weekend! For seven hours yesterday I shot little ballerinas' dress rehearsal in support of the Los Olivos Dance Gallery where my daughter goes. 1203 frames, all RAW. I will be shooting the first of three production nights tonight for about three or four hours. I am hoping to get my fisheye up in the lighting truss to capture the entire stage and audience.
Tomorrow, for 10 hours I will be shooting portraits, sigh ... I just couldn't pass up the money. If I am still standing at the end of that I will rush off and shoot another evening of ballet! Saturday noonish I will be shooting a couple of hours of the youngest ballerinas, including my daughter. Saturday evening I am shooting a VIP event at the casino. Sunday I will be post processing.

Jeff Healy on monday. Had it confirmed today. Am about to order a 50 prime for it as it's the same venue as when I did Spocks Beard. Can have the prime delivered monday but am thinking of swinging for a saturday delivery so I get 2 days to play with it first.
Now, there is a story behind this which I'll relay at a later point.

Sounds like you guys are real busy...
I'm still laying low ... while the local venue is hosting "graduations" and Weddings"...
At the end of the month, I'll be at the Dickey Betts & Great Southern Concert, Thursday and missing the fab "Lonestar" on Friday, June 1st...
In the meantime I'm invited to shoot the "Jukebox Cruisers", a local vintage, classic, hot rod, muscle car and rare motorcycle touring club.
And I'm honing my skills, while taking close up and macro photos of spring flowers, and other plant blossoms...
(This next month is the slowest time for me in over a year...)
Check my signature out for my latest posts...
Good luck to everybody...

Just got back from the Dickey Betts & Great Southern at Penn's Peak... The opening Act is The Craig Thatcher Band... It was a great four hour show...
I'll post photos from The Craig Thatcher Band in the next day or two...
Per Dickey Betts last minute request, no photography was permitted after the opening act... since the sign on the front door said "only no flash photography"...some still tried to take pics... Therefore, I won't be posting any photos of the Legendary Dickey Betts, also known as the founding member of The Allman Brothers Band... Hello all,
Well finally i have a few weeks of mayhem ahead of me,
This weekend I'm doing monitors and shooting The gathering festival (small outdoor gig 400-600 people) 8 bands.
Next week im doing FOH during the day so i can shoot the main acts during the night, The Dreaming Festival (3 day event, few thousand every day) long hours.
both festivals are north of Brisbane, (sunshine coast) for the Aussies.
Then 2 weeks after that it's a Motley Crue bash@ the Gold Coast with all bands playing headbanging heavy metal....should be some good action shots i hope. Woo Hoo I have nothing to do with audio so im free to keep the trigger down.
Have a good weekend everyone :)

Ssshhhh... so Steve and Chris don't notice...
Last encore song...Melissa... Everyone ran up to the front of the stage where I was sitting... Many cameras were going off all around me... So, Most discretely, I snapped a few of Dickey, and also his son... The bass player saw me and was laughing and making faces into my camera... Later, his son and others from the band came over to shake hands, Dickey kept away from the audience...
Note, back a few months ago , Allman Brothers didn't want any photos by anyone, either...

One more time on this one Narlus... Check the bass player, he sees me taking a picture and stares into the lens from across the stage about 35 feet away... I took just a very few pics during the very last song...
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l60/stoy17/DickeyBetts/IMG_20070531_9999_327.jpg
(Apparently, Dickey was intending to do a long show (over 3 hours,) and didn't want to be distracted... and (according to one of my inside sources) even threatened to leave the stage if anyone was taking pictures.)
I've decided not to post any pics of Dickey Betts or any of the band members... I even spoke to the venue Mgr. before the show, and at that time, he wasn't aware of Dickey's request of no pics, till after the Opening Act finished... No one gets to see my few pics...
The funny thing is, the Dickey Betts web site is loaded with pictures by fans and audience from venues and shows all over the country... His son didn't mind... I was right in front of him and he looked right into my camera and smiled... Later he came over and shook my hand... :D

Definitely very photogenic, makes ones life easy. Kimberly is 8 months pregnant, but looked great. That 'glow' they always talk about for pregnant women seems to be true.
I had great access everywhere. On stage, backstage, dressing rooms, etc. We got some great shots after the show backstage, and during the filming of the video. Met the entire crew and band, and they are great down to earth people. Never listened to country in the past, but really liked their music. Maybe I'll be converted after listening to LBT and Martina. Who knows..
Here are a few behind the scene stills from the music video production. I can't release the show images until it gets through their management. These are all unedited.

Very nice selection to choose from there Kalle! Can't wait to see your shots especially of The Bellrays, The Hives and Mastodon (I hope they have more than just blue light when you shoot them).

Was looking forward to T-in The Park this weekend, been charging my batteries sorting out the tent etc when I got a phone call today saying my pass has been pinched by some stinking journalist, so I miss out on the chance of shooting; Arctic Monkeys, Brian Wilson, The Skids, CSS, Biffy Clyro, QOTSA, Wu-Tang, New Young Pony Club, Shadow & Cut Chemist, Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright... to name but a few.   Hope it rains the whole weekend now.

I'm going through withdrawal right now. Nothing on the immediate radar until a possible Levon Helm show next weekend.
