I intend to buy a Powershot G5 but after searching on net, I found that the G5 is $447 but the G3 is $579.

My question is why the 5.0MP like G5 is cheaper than the 4.0MP G3.

Would appreciate your advices with many many thanks

There are a lot of places selling it for around $490. I found a couple that actually had it for $399. It didn't say that it was a refurb anywhere, so I don't know if it was or not.

Are you talking about prices from the same supplier?? The G3 is discontinued, so perhaps the pricing they have on that is representative of old stock they are holding, or that they haven't changed the price on the G3 since it was dropped from the range, but they have applied the price drop on the G5... the G5 may well be on it's last sales legs, in which case the price from Canon will drop dramatically so they clear them out, and again they place has stock or is no longer updating the G3 price...

It could be representative of the G3 being a more desirable camera in some peoples eyes... it could be because they have GENUINE G3's and imported G5's... they may have purchased some G5's at a special price from Canon...

If you want a G5, and the G5 is cheaper than a G3, I'm not sure why you would be concerned that it's cheaper... in the words of a recently jailed and then released Australian politician, Please Explain... :-)

Cheers,
Stuart

I agree with Stuart on this one (hi Stu "Scooter" here!).

I've had my G5 for a few months, its a fantastic camera, there is no reason to buy a G3 rather than the G5.

except for the increased chromatic aberration

Maybe Canon found a cheaper way of manufacture the G-series cameras so is passing the saving down to the consumers?

Yo,
The G3 is discontinued, thus now "rarer" than the G5. I am guessing it is something like that.

I have read a bit about this on the web, and have found claims that the G5 has a slightly bigger problem with noise and chromatic aberrations compared to the G3, although both suffer from these problems to some degree. I think it has something to do with cramming 5mp on the same sized sensor as the 4mp G3. They are virtually identical cameras in all other respect (excluding the mp) so I guess some people will think the g3 is more desirable, hence the price difference. I own a G5 and am pretty happy with it, but I have never owned a g3 so I guess I dont really know if its any better/worse. Check out:

Someone took side by side shots of the g3 and g5. Not much difference, maybe more saturated pics for the g3.

Good luck!

Yo,
Cameratopia.com has the G5 for $419, though I don't know how reputable they are. Buydig.com has it for $459. Grrreat prices, in my opinion.

The G3 may cost more than the G5 because all the freaks on these types of forums are constantly harping on how bad the G5 is and how good the G3 is. Enough newbies with understanding either which way may be keeping the prices of discontinued and more "valuable" G3 high.

I guess the G3 was/is somewhat of a legend in its heydey (the eight months from the end of 2002 to mid 2003).
