I'm a little puzzled here, since I cannot determine the difference between the imported and US products, except the price - imported is cheaper. Why would anyone want to buy the same thing for more money?

Because of guaranties. If your imported fails, you have to bring it back to the shop you bought it.
With us you can bring it to any shop.
B&H has a nice explanation on his site.

B&H site seems to be down right now...
So, since we both live outside US... Does this mean, that if you buy a US camera/lens you can use any authorized service in your country within warranty and if it's imported the warranty is accepted only in the exact store you bought it at? Isn't there something called 'factory warranty' that sticks to the product no matter what?

What i've read. No. I had a nice page explaining how the 'grey market' works. This link:

Comes close to the page i can't find at the moment.
Basicly, if you buy in the US and want it repaired under warranty in your own country, buy the US version. Thats the way it is unfortunatly. I haven't tried it though. And i don't know anyone that needed a repair on a grey market product so i can't tell what the canon repair center says when you offer the equipment for reparation.
