Sorry for the loss. I imagine that it's no consolation that it was the 18-55 that bit the dust instead of a more costly item.

looks like the filter did something useful... if the lens broke anyway, one point less for filters, one point more for hoods

That sucks. Did the lens break or just the filter?

Wanna buy my sigma 24-70 EX DG, you'll save at least $200 CAD from buying from me then a local store. I'll throw in Shipping to Calgary for free.

Looks like just the filter to me. the kit lens is so light, with any luck it will be undamaged.

Bad luck though. An L lens would leave a dent in the floor, and need an expensive trip to the lens hospital.

I dropped a 70-200 2.8 two feet to the floor and obliterated the filter-- that's the last time I ever carried it front element pointed down in my bag. It was not a regular camera bag, I was subbing it in because of the waterproofing it has. It got slippery and as I was trying to set it down, thud, right to the floor. I still find glass shards in the bag, but the lens was fine. I can't imagine it would handle a longer fall all that well. I guess the weight that extra build quality gives can also be a detriment.

Looks like a good excuse to upgrade and to keep the hood on whatever you upgrade too.
