View Full Version : Just picked up a Slingshot 200

I may yet take it back... I thought it would be a good compromise, but I'm not so sure now.

At the moment I have hardly any gear - basically a 400D and 24-105mm f/4 L

However, I have a lovely wish list :lol: (don't we all) and plan on adding as my budget allows, and not necessarily in order, a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L, 580 EX, macro lense (either 100mm or 180mm) and a good wide angle - not sure what yet. Add to that a battery grip and sooner or later a new body, and there's no way I'll be getting all of that in the Slingshot 200 (not to mention the weight factor!)

At the moment, and in the foreseeable future the bag is overkill for my gear. Maybe I should have gotten a smaller bag for now, and then when my needs demand it I could invest in a proper backpack to hold it all...

I also have a quick question - will the lense hood become deformed sitting in the bag like this? It doesn't look too comfy... (see pic)

Your lens hood will not become deformed - don't worry about that.
Since this bag is overkill for what you have now and may be too small for what you will ultimately have, I'd return it and get something a bit smaller. Then, when it becomes necessary, get a larger bag. You'll then have two sizes, one for when you want to travel light and take minimal gear and one for when you want to take everything.

Hey mate I dont think its overkill at all If you want to get those lenses you will need a bag to accomodate them :D I just bought a Lowepro Naturetrekker II thought I would show you how the 100-400mm L fits in there with the lenshood on. I also have the 24-105m on the right and a 580ex in its case.

In my Slingshot 200 I carry a 70-200 f/2.8IS (takes up left 1/3 of case), a 30D w/17-55 f/2.8, 10-22,85 f/1.8, and 580EX (stored in top compartment). This includes the lens hood for all the lenses except the 85mm.

The only downside to this setup is that the 70-200 can not be packed attaced to the lens- for that you'd need the Slingshot 300. It will be a while before you outgrow this bag and unlike backpacks which are better suited for transporting large quantities of equipment, you will be able to work out of the Slingshot w/o having to put your bag on the ground.

I just ordered mine from B&H, cant wait till it gets here!! Looks nice and roomy.

Nah, your lens hood will be fine.
I started out with one body and one lens and one big bag. Now I have a full big bag and saved $100 or so by not purchasing two bags. I think it comes down to fit on your body. If you carry your gear in it and it moves with you and not against you then it is the right bag for ya.
