A quick check; do the big Ls have a rotable rear section so you can rotate the
camera bosy without having to rotate the lens?

I don't think so. But what you'd do to take a portrait telephoto shot is rotate the tripod collar around the lens (or more properly, the camera and lens rotates within the tripod collar).

Does that make sense?

the lens and body rotate around the tripod collar as said not one or the other.

I wonder what lenses I'm thinking off. They had a silver release button a the back, press it and you could rotate the body 90deg . Could it have been the late FD Ls?

Yes, I believe that this is what you are thinking of. Several of the "new" FD super-teles had an integral foot for mounting to a tripod, and a small section of the lens (often coloured black) that permitted camera rotation.
