Taken during a recent trip to Mexico...

ISO200, 1/160, f/9, at 70mm using Sigma 17-70. Manual exposure, no PP (a bit of cropping).

We spent a week in Cancun in November, and since my 16-month-old son decided to wake up at 5am every morning, I had plenty of opportunities for sunrise photos :). Unfortunately I didn't have my tripod, and was a bit limited in movement (by the stroller ;) ). I ended up taking a couple of dozen of shots like this, and this is my favorite. You can see the full image here (http://public.fotki.com/dstartsev/2006/mexico/img4706.html), if interested. Generally I found the best sunrise shots were the ones I under-exposed a bit.

Here's one more. This one needs some straightening and a bit of cropping... but as I am sitting at work that will have to wait. This one's not bad either. Similar settings, except this one is on the wide end (17mm) at f/13.

Wow!

Love the way the sun is bursting trough the clouds. Also, I like how the birds almost appear to be sitting on the horizon. :D

My only gripe would be that the horizon is a bit too central in the image for my liking.

Great photo. Only thing I would like to see a little more detail in the post. Other than that, excellent image. Nice work.

Thanks :)

I'll go back and add some details.

Nice, the horizon is just below centre, maybe it would have benefitted from being shot at a slightly lower angle so that the posts of the pier would have been above the horizon, not level with it. The bird coming in to land is a great asset!

Thanks, good point. I couldn't decide whether to have the posts just above the horizon, just below the horizon, or level. Ended up with whatever came out :)

I really like how the position of the sun made the waves more apparent in that second shot. The first shot is amazing with the gulls and the broken-down dock. It's just got a "end of a fun summer day" feel to it.

Yup... except it was taken at sunrise ;)

The first one is really nice, did you mean to get the top of the posts and gulls "sitting on the horizon"? Cute :-)
