My setup is this -- I have 3 550's and 2 Alien Bee's. Currently, I use the ST-E2 transmitter to fire the 550's, hard-wire one of the AB's to my camera and then set the other AB to use the built-in slave.
I want everything to be wireless... However, I have to hard-wire the one AB to my camera b/c it has a softbox mounted on it and using the built-in slave doesn't always work (b/c) it's behind the softbox. So, what I'm wondering is if there's a "receiver" (sort of like a Pocket Wizard) unit that I could hook up to the one AB so I wouldn't have to hard-wire it. I'm tired to tripping over the dang cord!!!
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide!

Since your problem is that the built in slave of the Alien Bee doesn't always see the flash to fire because of the softbox, plug in a digital slave to that Alien Bee instead of the camera using the PC cord. A digital slave will ignore pre-flash. Wein makes them.

I agree that a digital slave trigger does this. My question is "How?"
Does it simply detect the pre-flash and then wait a fixed amount of time before triggering the remote flash? Or, does it use some more sophisticated system? I'm just curious.

I have a few Wein Digital Slaves. The package has no explanation, nor does the Wein home page, as to how it "ignores" the pre flash. Maybe Gitzo knows?
