Not sure it belongs in this section. Shot this Saturday night on Tybee Island, Georgia. The launch was over three hundred miles away...........but it was great. 5d - 24-70L 30 second exposure at 6.3.

Nice photo. Curious, can you hear it from there?

I'm only 200 miles away and it wasn't that great! I was waiting for someone to post a picture of it.

OMG over 300 miles away?!?!?!

dang, that's amazing. please tell me you could hear it from there too...haha that would be awesome :)

'could have gone in transportation too lol

funny how it's totally appropriate by definition, but I really can't see this going in that forum haha

You could not hear the shuttle.... as a matter of fact we had no idea as to where it would rise off the horizon. What we saw was a glow, similar to a sunrise, then the rocket tail became visable. Shot a second exposure but the shuttle turned away and could not be seen. I agree, it's hard to belive it was over 300 miles away.

If my math is right, you would hear the shuttle about 30 minutes after you saw it lift off? If you could hear it at all from that distance.

That is pretty cool!

nope, 5 minutes...if it could be heard

1 second for every mile....300 miles = 300 seconds = 5 minutes

.....roughly :)

Tybee Island is 230 miles as light travels, but who's counting. Awesome pic. BTW.

um... nah:)

30 mins is correct.

cool shot!

Um.. 60/ (770/232) = 18 minutes

lol. ok kids lets do some maths!

sound travels at 330m/s yes?

launch was 300 miles away, thats 483,000 metres.

483,000/330 = 1464 secs

1464/60 = 24 minutes!

Wahey!

EDIT: haha just realised the distance has been revised... gjl you're correct:P gah who gives a stuff!

Wahey!
Google earth puts it at 232 miles as light travels. It might be 300 by roads but light is going to cut right across the water. And sound at sea level is 344 m/s or 770 mph at sea level. So thats 373367m / 344m/s or 1085 s or 18 minutes.

Still, it's a great pic.

Whoa!

You math wiz's are forgetting that temperature changes the speed that sound travels at. (http://www.sengpielaudio.com/SpeedOfSoundPressure.pdf)

See:

I expect new calculations based on temperature!

Just kidding. ;-)

WOW!!! It changes a lot. No wonder my kids can’t hear me in the winter here in Chicago. It's because sound travels a whole lot slower. Hey wait, they can’t hear me in the summer either. Hmm.. back to the drawing board.

I've been waiting for a pic of the shuttle. I've always been a space buff.

Now, move over, and let a real mathematical genius help you guys with the calculations here. See if you can follow me.

1X = (bz4_3) x 10 to the 11th if Z equals L.

Okay, boys, go to work.
