I tried a friends older 1.4x converter on my 70-200f2.8 IS.
It retaned IS, but it won't AF.
Is there a newer model that will allow AF or is this a camera issue?
I am shooting the D60.

AF and IS should work
Certainly works on my Canon 1.4x (Mark 2 version) and 70-200 F2.8L IS
Last week in Cape Town...

There are no reasons why the MkI should not work with your camera and lens.
The only difference between the MkI and MkII 1.4x Extenders is in the improved waterproofing on the MkII.
I would suggest that there is something physically wrong with the Extender if your lens and body work OK together without it.

I own the MkII 1.4x converter, and the 70-200 F2.8L (non IS), and it works fine on my 10D. I don't know if any of that helps any but there it is for what it's worth.

Yep,. it should have worked.. there must have been a contact that was not conducting??? or, dare I suggest,.
...could the AF switch have been bumped?
(I only say this because I have the lens and just spent about an hour with the IS turned OFF because of how easy it is for the buttons to move.. I only discovered it when the AF suddenely stopped working.. because I had bumped that switch too... )

Cyberdyne....
Sooo true!! I did some aerial pictures form a noisy open top bi-plane a few weeks back and had knocked the AF and IS switch off (I had to wear goggles so failed to notice for a while!)
I think a local modification is required.......some tape that doesn't leave a mess... or maybe an elastic band? Very easily done.

All usual disclaimers ( I cannot be held responsible, get an adult to help you with the sharp implements etc.) apply if you decide to go ahead with the following.
I have never done this personally (yet) but.....
I am told that if you take the plate which carries the switches for the IS, MF/AF and distance limiter off you can, with a little care, adjust the amount of pressure on the switch detents to make them more positive and harder to knock off setting.
I know of a couple of people who have done this on 300/2.8Ls and they say it is well worthwhile and I am tempted to do it on my 300 as I keep knocking odd switches off- especially when wearing gloves.
You could of course find a friendly repair man to do it for you!

Hmmm.. I will look into this,. I have a passion for hard ware "hacks & Mods" :)
I was actually thinking of something a little lower tech.. a dab of the cheap clear plastic hot melt glue!
It would hold the switches on for sure,. and IF you ever neded to turn them off,. the dab of hot melt would peel off very easily.
