On several sites, i read that using a UV filter on the 100-400 IS L could cause IS problems or focus problems !
Does somebody have experience or can tell me more about this ?

I have just satarted using the 100-400 and from day 1 there has been a Hoya Multi-Coated UV filter on the front. Can't say that it has caused any IS or focus problems.
Maybe someone else has had an occurance.

Thanks for the fast reply.
I am using the same filter and did not have problems yet but i wondered if someone had problems in the past.

When I first got the lens, April 2003, I used a Canon UV filter & had no problem w/ AF.
I don't use a filter anymore just the hood all the time.

No probs here. UV went on lens the second I unwrapped it.

I never use the 100-400 without a UV filter or CPL. Never had a problem.

Thanks for the reactions.
I bought the lens about 2 weeks ago but weather has been very bad overhere so did not have much test time. But 1 thing i noticed.....as i am new to big zoomlenses, it might be my mistake.
When a take a shot of a bird say 30 or 40 feet away and i put it at 100% crop on the computer, most birds are fuzzy and not sharp at all. No matter what i do, iso change, av change, everytime the same result.
Is this my fault are camera/lens fault ??
(sorry for my english)

I don't have the 100-400,..
...but I have had this exact same issue with another lens,. a 70-200mm.. with the Hoya UV filter mounted,. under certain conditions the AF would get thrown off by several feet!!! It was clearly visible through the view finder... but, by removing the UV filter, AF would return to normal.
Again,. I have this problem with one lens with one particular filter (the filter is fine on other lenses, the lens was fine with a cheaper UV filter) and then only under specific lighting conditions (allways out side,... but sometimes with the sun at my back,. others with it in front)
The best thing you can do is just try your lens out with the filter and be aware that if AF goes screwy the first thing you should try is a different UV. (or no UV)

Thanks.....will remove the Hoya filter and see what happens. Indeed, it seems that the AF is not on the subject and i am certain that i focused correctly.
