A camera is all you should need and imagination, its handy to bring along a tripod also as it will support your camera while you setting up your lights. The studio should provide you with the sync leads which will trigger the lights.

99.9% of the professional studios I have seen in my 25 years as a pro use some sort of a radio tripper. I use Quantum Radio 4, others use Pocket Wizards. That way there are no PC cords to trip over, get in the way or come loose. One end simply plugs into a transmitter the other fits into your hot shoe or plugs into your PC outlet in your camera. When you trip the shutter it transmits a signal to the receiver to fire the flash.

As "heffsarmy" says, if you are hiring the studio, then they should provide you with everything you need, although maybe it's best to ask for a list from them, just so that you don't waste a booking, your time (and that of a model maybe) and money by turning up and finding "something is missing"

Something they will probably expect you to have (but again ask, as there may be one spare) is a light meter. You ideally need to have one, (and a broad idea of how to use it)
as it saves an awfull lot of "chimping" the histogram to get the best exposure.

What type of photo's are you thinking of taking - and have you had any experience of portraite type shots? It's probably best to get some practice in before spending money on a studio. That way you have a better idea of what you want to produce (because you've already tried) which again, saves time and money (unless you have plenty of both! ;-))

I hire my studio out we use a radio trigger and have a sync lead as backup plus a hotshoe addapter just in case i often get emails - have i got this and that so i would say write yourself a list of what your not sure about and ring the studio they will soon anser any questions .as for a flash meter we have them but to be honest no one ever use's them but chimp the lcd, for most shots this work's fine and imho it is far easyier for someone not use to a flash meter as they can really confuse when 4 or 5 strobe's are being used.

i think Teejay meant a flash meter Not light meter i dont dissagree with him but as he says you would need to know how to use it .

its just a room with lights basically no cables....just a room with a roll of blue, black and white "paper" if you like...when a photographer hired it to takes pics of the mrs for a shoot he took loads of stuff out of his bag to set it all up
