Or does it add something?
The perspective lines that it creates I found interesting and had to take the shot - just a shame its been a dull grey sky all day!!!!

Meerkat:
I too, like this shot.
The improvement that I can see, right off the top of my eyes, is that I wouldn't have used a flash, or at the least I would have used a diffuser.

Flash was a mistake but I didnt have a tripod with me and there was nothing around to support the camera with, also I don't have a separate flash unit with diffuser (yet) just the internal flash on the G5.
The structure is a bridge as illustrated in the following pic.
Its just outside Durham City, UK and the ruin (building) in the background is an old Abbey which was used by the Prince Bishops of Durham Cathedral as a retreat. The wire was put there becasuse there have been a few accidents involving children whilst playing on the bridge.

I really like these geometrical subjects. Nice photograh. I think the one complaint I'd make about the choice of subject here is that the geometry is quite "busy," and the eye loses itself in all the warring intersections. It's difficult to know where the focus is here because the elements of the foreground and background compete with each other for attention, for predominance as the true focus of the subject. It's interesting because the moment you look at this picture vision is shattered in so many directions, it has an almost disorienting, unsettling effect. BTW, very nice pic of the bridge from the outside.

Thanks Boojum, I think the reason for taking the shot was I was forced to look at the foreground of the shot but as soon as I looked beyond the the "one point perspective" of the bridge took my eye to the abbey.
You are right of course, it is disorientating and confusing to the eye.

The fact is I like photographs that in some way defy our sense of classical perspective, where everything is not as orderly as we expect it should be. Photographs that disorient are no less valid than ones that guide. Your second photo definitely guides the eye, whereas this one confounds it. To me that's a good thing. I like the unexpected. There's not enough of it.
Cheers.

I really like the geometry in this shot - I agree with the flash suggestion, but understand not having one yet. I haven't purchased a new on either and am finding it can be a pain in the butt.
Overall I like the perspective and focus. Nicely done!

Thanks, the new flash is ordered and I won't be making the same mistake again!

i really like the first one. i don't think it is busy at all. There is a lot of 'depth' to the picture that requires close study. the only suggestion i have is that with so much symmetry in the picture, i would have like to have seen the wire of the cage bisect the bridge exactly. i am very distracted b y it not, but i may just be odd. once again, great picture

Nice shot David. A little diffusion on the flash would have helped, but to me doesn't distract that much from this shot. LOVE all the angles you have captured there. What does it look like with the bar centered in the path at the far end of the bridge? Did you get a shot like that?
Sure a cool way to look at a bridge!

You could minimize the sky a bit by shooting from a slightly higher angle so the abby was nearly "touching" the wood cross braces. Then still crop at the crossbrace intersection, and there will be less sky. Not standing there I'm not sure how this would work, but it's what I would try.

Another way would be to get the end of the path centered in one of the mesh squares, I think that would look right too.
