Sure,

Over in the share photo forum, there is a sort of informal monthly competition that is a lot of fun for photographers at all levels.

I find that people vote for the most unexepected photos...
Last time im sending submissions thats for sure. Not that i am disapointed my photos are not being voted as i knew they wouldnt. I am just disapointed in the photos that are being voted.

I suppose the "Danger contest" is ok if you forget it has a theme. There are great pictures there, but it's disappointing how people simply ignore the theme imho. If that's the idea, why not just call it "Nice photos contest"? :)
Or maybe my expectations were high, and I really expected people to vote for those fotos that fit the theme best AND were good, not the opposite priority.

Kell, I would hope to agree with you, I would like to think it would explain why I don't get many votes in these competitions.

However, remembering that the: (from Ilya in the Hard at work competition) Main objective is to challenge your skills, have you try something maybe you haven't tried before, either in technique or subject matter, and most of all to have FUN.
It is worthwhile keeping it in perspective.

I am happy with the competition and how it is run and plan to keep submitting entries. Coming up with the perfect photo that gets the majority of the votes of our peers is always going to be a challenge.

Keep up the effort.

Although I see Kell's point, I am somewhat in disagreement with him for the following reasons...

First, the contest is a very loose and informal contest which is being hosted out of the members of the forum who are willing to volunteer their time. There are no strict definitions or rules being set and there are no group members which oversee or monitor this contest. As has been said before, it really is about learning and having fun. If someone really wants a more stringent set of rules, I suggest sites like www.dpchallenge.com. Their contest is very strictly monitored with very strict rules. But even there, I suggest you scan the submissions for their various contests. I think you will see many submissions which are also not representative of the topic.

Second, the topic of the contest is "DANGER (Pictures of something dangerous, bad for you, could kill etc.)" It is a topic which can be very loosely interpreted. Indeed, I think that every entry, in one form or another, has tried to adhere to the topic. It is really about what the photographer sees or senses and the attempt to convey that same perception through a photograph. That is the true challenge which underlies much of photography. The same can be said of those who vote. Many voters do see the photograph as being on topic, while others may not. Hopefully, all voters will try to vote on both the ability to capture the topic and the ability to do it well. Although some may not choose to vote that way, I think the majority of members do.

The only thing each of us can do is our best given our understanding of the GENERAL rules of the contests. I for one am glad that we have members who are willing to put in the effort in hosting and submitting. Although I have not submitted to each contest, I like the fact that it causes me to start thinking about how I might want to present the topic in a photo. Even if the submissions are off-topic, I think we can all still learn through the shared experience.

No one is required to participate, but I would encourage everyone who has the time to do so. So you don't get many votes or you don't win (it's not like there are any prizes awarded). You get the opportunity to do something you love (photography), have a little fun, and possibly learn a little in the process. What's so bad about that?

Just my two cents. Sorry for the long post.

Now you see, "Hard at work" competition is one that i though was great because people voted not for the best photos but for those that best represented the theme.

I don't know... it seems to me that the submissions and the voting were no more or less on topic than those in this contest (or even the previous ones). I think most people are pretty aware of the contest theme when voting. Perhaps in future contests we should stress the fact that voting should be predicated first on adherence to the theme, and then quality of the image.

I see four out of 30 i think it is, picutres that dont quiet go well with the topic.

Doesnt mattter to me, i'm in it for the fun, and while having fun iwht it i think i got one hell of a photograph. Obviously it's a bias opinion but i dont think it's too far out there. I really truely think it may be one of the best photographs i've ever taken, with that said i got what i wanted out of it.

If i win yay..if not, oh well. If you entered the contest to flex your nuts in front of everyone then i think your in the wrong place.

And for the record i'll be voting tonight.

P.S. i dont know if my picture is getting as many votes as it should, i think mines prolly the 4th or 5th best up there, but thats just my opinion and it very well could be differnt (and so far it aparently is) from the rest of the worlds.

The contests here are really informal, and that's how they should be. They are a great vehicle to 'get your feet wet' or just to keep thinking up new pictures.

Since the judging is free form the votes may be influenced by photographic merit, appeal, personal influence, and a myrid of other factors.

I think all of the pictures in the danger contest DO represent some form of danger, though the danger may be secondary to the subject.
