And yes, I have already tried strapping the 1.4 onto the back of the 2x and 300mm;)

'tis.
I know this has been done to death elsewhere - but while we're on the subject - what's the preferred custom-function setting for the AF-stop buttons for motorsport use? I've switched AF to the exposure-comp button on the camera (fine and good) - is the AF-point switch, or AF-servo more use?
I'm guessing the former...

I'm here quite frequently actually. I just don't post that often. And when I do I normally post something ridiculous that does nothing to contribute to the forward progress of the forum or ongoing discussion. Bottom line is, I just don't have oodles of time reading all the threads and posting on the forums as much as I used to. But thanks for caring, Snir. How many beers do I owe you now? ;)

I usually set it up to toggle between AI Servo and One Shot, but it probably depends on the application really. I have AF-point programmed to the rear-wheel and leave the AF with the shutter button.

Congratulations - you will love it. Lightning fast focus and sooooooooo sharp!
The best lens I have ever used for sport.....I am trying to block the 400 2.8 out of my mind - if the 300 is this good, then with the extra reach of the 400.....and a 2.8 aperture......and such quick focus.....oh.....sorry, I'll snap out of it, I am day-dreaming again!!! :D
I picked up my 300/2.8 about 3 weeks ago (a non-IS, "pre-enjoyed" copy in imaculate condition) and am delighted with it.
I would post pics however at am work, but will instead refer you to the images section on my website (see signature).....the 2 main galleries were taken using it......all shot wide open (oh, some on there were taken with the 70-200 on a second body).
Will post some pics when I get near my laptop this evening.
Enjoy the lens!!

Some day, some day....
I actually have a legit reason now.. some of the wildlife I'd like to shoot likes to hide deep in the forest, where you need every stop you can get. A 420mm (1.4X) f/4 IS USM L would be nice, but Canon doesn't make one apart from the even more outrageously priced DO.

Thank you Timmy.
What I always find disturbing in an image like yours above (call it a sign of my anatomical insecurities if you wish;) ) is the length of your rig (jig ?).
I suppose you need to accept first that I value compact if not neccessarily light. One of the strengths of the lens is it's marginaly/relatively tractable size/weight. Therefore, I'd endeavour to make it look smaller, not bigger !
Ronald S. Jr.
13th of December 2006 (Wed), 11:24
It's a rather compact lens once you lose the hood and pair of TC's. Not big at all, by my standards.

Crash, are you looking for someone to fab you a custom mounting plate that fits to the bottom of the collar?
I have a CNC machine/welding fab shop but any machine shop could make you an aluminum one easy if thats what you are looking for.

Gad! Has anyone managed to own one of these for as long as me and use it as little? Work, Christmas and so-on have conspired to give it no more than trivial use so far...:o
Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions for suitable tripod and heads. I've spent some time searching the forums and it would appear that the Manfrotto 488 RC2 ball head should be up to the job - and mebbe the 055PROB or 055MF3???
I currently have a fairly low-end Manfrotto monopod and ball-head, so I'm comfortable with the name and quality of equipment - just not sure if it they're 'right' for the lens.

it will be F8.
Crop factor of the body is not applied to the aperture value.
Max Aperture value if i am not wrong is: F60 or F62
