These are some great shots. I'll be in Puerto Rico over Christmas visiting my family and i've already requested atleast a day to hiking through the mountains to see what wildlife I can find. Hopefully i'll be able to capture something like this.

Beautiful shots of the Chestnut-mandibled toucan, the largest of the Costa Rican species. Were you at Hacienda baru?I have been there in support of their efforts. They are about 2 miles from where I stay , on Playa Guipiel at a friends house. These were actually taken up in the mountains in Uvita. They were feeding in some of these trees (sorry, I forgot the name of the tree) . It was on a very steep revene side where I was at eye level with the tucans in the upper branches of the trees. They were throughly enjoying the feed and did not scare off as quickly as is usual... The lady I was with said there had been over twenty in those trees early that morning...I think there were 5 or 6 that evening...I have been running around there for 8 years trying to get a really good shot but almost always they are up where I can only get them from below looking up...I got about 25 photos from this setting...It was late so I had my 70-200 sigma lens set at 2.8...good for the light but I was close enough so that that DOF was to short, leaving most of the shots with some fuzzyness on one end or the other of the bird...Thanks!

Lee Ha ! It is always a great sight...The Ticos think I'm nuts...every time I hear one I drop whatever I'm doing , grab the camera and head for the trees....For them it's as common as seeing a blue Jay!
