I was wondering if you guys happened to know where the best spot is for photos at this track? I decided not to purchase the super photo ticket as it is just too expensive. However, I have decided that I am going to rent a professional lens for a day just to have fun. Based on where you suggest the best spot to take photos is, what do you think is the best lens to use? I was thinking 400mm but does anyone have suggestions?
Thanks

You should really get the super photo as the LBGP sets up stands for them and the give pretty good spots for the shots.
See: http://www.race-photography.com/longbeachgrandprix2006pg1.asp what youc an get.
Plus pit access.

Ahhh...the Long Beach Grand Prix! I used to live in Belmont Shores...never took pictures at the Grand Prix...but had many drinks there. Too many drink if I recall. Good luck with the pictures..make sure you post them when you return.

The LBGP isn't the greatest place to shoot from spectator areas. There are a few places where you can be on the spectator side of things and press your lens up against the first set of fences and shoot through some of the photo cut-outs (given there isn't someone in them). The Super Photo towers allow for nearly unobstructed views, but they are all from above... which gets quite repetitive as the weekend goes on. When I shot as a spectator I had a 300mm f/2.8 and a 1.4xTC for a few shots, but much of it was done with the 70-200mm. If you plan on shooting through fences though, you'll want longer glass.
My real opinion about the LBGP? Enjoy the event... or photograph the event... but you can't really do both from the spectator side of the fence. If you seriously want to shoot... get credentials. If you are going to enjoy the race... just shoot a few pictures from grandstands and around the course, but enjoy the race.
