The muted coloring reflects the dreary day it was outside, and the somber mood my sister was in.

Hey Jeremy,

I think this is a nice shot... good pose on her part and good composition. I would expect her features to be softened a little, but I think the way you left it matches her mood well. The only thing I don't like is the bright white background behind her. Still, a very nice shot. :)

Nice shot, nice colour

personally I'd get rid of the pole or even the whole background - the pole is confusing to the eye and as the eye travels out to the edge of the face its forced to travel upwards when it reaches the pole.

Just my thoughts

Cheers

Yeah, unfortunately I think that is where the sun was supposed to be that day, even though it was gray for the most part. At a different angle, it might have brought out the true color of the sky better.

During the shots I was taking of her that day, she didn't actually know I was shooting pictures of her. She just thought I was messing with my camera while we were talking. :)

I left the pole in the picture to give an idea that we were actually outside during the shot, but I never thought of taking the whole background out of the picture. I will give that some consideration. Thanks.

Hey Jeremy,

Yeah, some of the best shots of my wife are those of a more candid nature. Some people are just more relaxed without the attention focused on them.

Good work, and keep on having fun! :)

I wouldn't take the whole background out. To me the background is too bright, but the objects, like the pole, aren't distracting to me because they are so far beyond the depth of field that they don't distract me at all. To me what would have truly made this photo is if your sister had engaged the camera by looking at it with that one eye in profile. I would have focused the camera and then said her name. When she glanced my way I would have snapped the shutter quickly. (And then I would have run away before she could wrestle the camera from my hands ;).

David is right, there is to much going on in the background wich is distracting, I also would remove that pole. The green stuff still gives the idea that you are outside.

Thank you all for your comments and advice, even though it seems some people would leave the background in the shot and others would take it out. :? But hey, everyone has their opinions, and I am glad you were all willing to give them.

In the end, I say, "Why try to take something out of the picture when that picture was true to what was in the background?" Out of all the backgrounds I could have chosen for that picture (we were at my work outside on a balcony), I would have had that pole in there...the other backgrounds were too blase (very plain office buildings, etc.). An besides, that was the way she was facing anyways, and I couldn't get a better profile shot if I wanted to!

Nice profile shot. If you don't take anything out of the background, then you are able to look at it and say, oh yeah, that was on the balcony where I worked at the time. The power pole will remind you of that. If you were to remove it, it could have been taken anywhere.

You achieved good skin tone. Your sister is Pretty girl. :D

I would leave the pole.

I think it's a great shot...just keep in mind you cropped that back of her head off.

:D Heh. I actually didn't crop the back of her head off. I just didn't have all of her head in the frame when I took the shot. I sometimes like to snap pictures of people off-center, for a slightly more artistic look I guess.
