Hello,
I've had my g3 for about a year now,And haven't had any problems until now.I went out today and shot some pics. When I got home this afternoon I plugged my camera into my pc as usual,But instead of asking me where I want the pictures put it said "new hardware found".The computer asked me to install the software that came with the camera,So I did.And nothing happed.I restored my computer to an earlier date to see if that would help but it didn't.Any suggestions??
I was also told that windows xp would recognize my camera with out software and it's not doing that either.
Thanks,
Astro

XP will recognize your camera if you set the communication in your camera's set-up to PTP. If you want your PC tp recognize your camera again when you plug it in the way you used to, uninstall the canon software, the re-install it before plugging in the camera. Maybe you updated the Bios?

I had the same problem with Windows 98 several months ago after working smoothly for a long time.
I tried reinstalling the drivers for my G3 to no avail.
Finally I uninstalled the drivers, Zoombrowser, Cam4You, and everything else associated with the G3 including the registry entries identifiied with “Canon” and then reinstalled.
That worked and I have had no problems since.
I wish I could specify the particular step which did the trick, but I cannot.

Do you unplug the camera or do you use the safely remove hardware option, because if you just unplug the camera the driver could have got corrupted. Or was the pc logged on as a new user than you usually use, because that will also do it.
As suggested just reinstall or update driver.

thanks for the replies everyone.I completely forgot about the PTP.I probably changed it by accident.I wound up installing the canon software,And everything works great now.I'll check the camera setting right now to see if that was the problem..............yup it was set to normal not ptp duhhhh.Anyway thanks again

My G3 communiucation mode is set to normal. But I installed the canon driver that came with the camera so I guess I could use either normal or PTP mode. Anyone know the advantage of using normal versus PTP mode? I looked in the manual and it says PTP mode may have "some problem download images to a computer in the PTP mode with certain file types." Any idea what the manual mean by that? I guess I'll stick with the normal mode for now.

Strange. I don´t get this option when my G5 is plugged to my computer, there is no "connected hardware symbol" and hence no safe removal option...
But when my Olympus stylus 400 is plugged to the computer I have the symbol and option....
Anybody know why?
Is there a risk of damaging the G5?
My operatingsystem is XP, by the way.

The G5 doesn't have the PtP option, I don't know why Canon changed it in the firmware.

My G3 doesn't give me the option in "safe to remove hardware" either only my satellite modem shows. I have the canon drivers installed. It has worked fine however.

This option will show only when your G3 is in PtP mode.
