I'm going to buy my wife one of these. Does oval have an advantage over circular? And How much does size matter? Is a 40x60 a huge difference over 36x48? Thanks. I know these are probably noob questions. But afterall she's the photographer.

the bigger it is the more evenly you can light your subject, but if its windy, all bets are off. they're just sails.
shape isn't that big of a deal, but I see mostly circular used.

What's a '5-in-1 reflector' refer to...a reflective fold up light panel? a reflective flash modifier with 5 different forms for different situations? a Swiss Army reflector with a can opener and screwdriver? ;)
My guess is you are considering reflective panels...what Corey says about 'big sail' is true. In fact, the biggest challenge to ANY panel is having an assistant available to hold it at precisely the right angle to cast light where you want it...small or large! The second challenge is using it in the sun, and keeping your subjects from squinting watery eyes caused by the reflection of the sun in them!

I think you of all people know ;)
I just use a 55" circular one thats white on one side and white/gold on the other.
pure silver or gold is very very bright on the model

The one I have is a Lastolite (sp?) 6-in-1 triangle reflector.
It's too small for anything other then a head and shoulders shot, I think it's around 30". Quality is top notch. The triangle is a sheer white on one side and black on the other, it has a slip cover with a different style on each side. You can turn it inside out for the other 2 sides. Gold & Gold + Silver and the other is Silver & Silver + White.
For the most part, I choose to use off camera fill flash whenever because people just squint like mad when blasted with a Gold reflector.

I use two sizes of 6-in-1 kits from Westcott, 30" and 42". I like them. They are not circles, rather kind of like rounded squares.

I've seen various Pro's use round ones, oval ones, little, big and giant ones....like everyone before has said...she'll be shooting the photo's and you'll be learning how to use it to get the "best" lighting...becareful, I roasted our first model. She had a great golden tan really quick!
I just purchased an oval 40w x 60h 5-n-1 for $49 brand new on ebay from seller: Amvona
great product, fantastic price, you just have to play the ebay bidding game.
Good luck...and Merry Christmas!

I have the 42" 5 in 1 (circular), got it off ebay and I absolutely LOVE it. The only trick is remembering to tell subjects to NOT look directly at it! :-)

Can anyone recomend the one being sold by alien bees? I was thinking of getting that one with the holder they carry.

Here's a decent setup to look at. This will let her set it up by herself.

I love my 32" 5-in-1. Whether I'm reflecting sunlight back toward the subject, bouncing on-camera flash or diffusing a harsh key, I use that reflector panel all the time. During an outdoor child portrait session (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=245694) I had one of the parents hold up the diffusion element for me. Voila! Instant assistant (that was paying me to be there, too).

I have purchased similar quality tripod stands off ebay. They are ok quality, not going to fall apart on you but not as nice to use as more expensive stands.
I would rather spend money on glass and other stuff because they do what they are supposed to do.

I have the alien bee holder, but a photoflex reflector. Very happy with both. Bought the reflector long before I bought the holder.
If I was doing this again, I would have bought a large piece of foam core from a local art show.
