I find that when I try to focus on the subject, even though the subject fills almost the entire LCD, the camera tends to attempt to focus on the background.

Example: Portrait type photo of my daughter in front of a tree or flowers or whatever. The flowers are about 3 feet behind her. The camera focuses on the flowers and not on her.
I even tried manual mode adjusting the aperture to its maximum size, but still get the same results.

Trying to use manual focus on an energetic 11 month old is IMPOSSIBLE!!

Any suggestions are appreciated.

If the subject is within about six feet, try switching to macro mode. It really seems to help. I end up with less of the background focus problems.

For portraits I have found that putting the camera in macro mode and zooming all the way in really helps develop the background blur in the shot, otherwise, the DOF is too wide for a good portrait.

Give it a shot (no pun intended) and see if it helps at all.
