Teleconverter Focus

I purchased a Olympus TCON-17 which I am using with a Canon lens adapter LA-DC58.

The pictures are sometimes in focus and sometimes not and though I've tried to figure out the formula, I am not sure what it is. With the TCON on, can I shoot pictures in AUTO and expect that they will normally be focused or do I need to use manual focus? And, in using manual focus are the increments the same as without the TCON? I am using a G1.

When I press the shutter down halfway, the focus seems to continue searching and sometimes ends up with a terrible focus setting.

Can the close up setting still be used?

I really appreciate any thoughts. Maybe I am just missing the point somewhere.

I use TCON-17 with G2. I did not notice that the AF performed different with the teleconverter attached.

There's no problem with my Canon TC-DC58N, but I can't imagine it has anything to do with the lens except the fact it isn't clean.

First, thanks to those who responded. I cleaned the lens to make sure that was not an issue.

I tried shooting at different disstances. Anything less than about 20 feet needs to be shot with the close-up or marcro button set. In the Auto or P mode, if I set it to macro, it will focus satisfactorily. In manual focus, all of the focus ranges, in shots of less than 20 feet or so, indicte that I must focus at about two or less than two feet.

Even in shooting at a long distance, the manual focus indicates I am shooting at less than 10 feet if I focus it correctly.

I have been using a digital zoom of 4X in these experiments so I can see the focus results as I am taking the picture.

you are right about the macro mode. i completely forgot about that. sometimes with a teleconverter you have to switch the camera to the macro mode to get AF working.

I purchased the wide lens converter for G1 and I can't get it to focus.

Any clues as to what I am doing wrong?
