Hi - i'm wondeing what's the appopriate settings to capture a pic of the moon w/o it showing just blob of light (sorry for my poor english :) ) someone recommended me using faster shutter speed but i dun think the ixus400 has controls for that. So far i've tried manual mode, infinity focus, AiAF off (with tripod) - the pic turned out like this, not showing details of the moon at all :(

This is impossible to get a single correct exposure due to the extreme contrast range (between the bright moon, and the dark ground.)

The intensity of the light on the moon is broad daylight, but exposing for this won't give you any workable exposure for the earthbound objects since the light source here is just reflection off the moon and not the direct sun. You'll need two exposures to pull this off. One for the surf, and one for the moon (use a tripod) and merge the two shots in your favorite graphics editor.

I don't know if this would work but have you tried setting the camera as manual, 2 second delay, ISO 400, Exposure and focus lock with a Long exposure of 6 seconds?

The moon is a lot brighter than you think this http://alnath.fotopic.net/p2804182.html was taken with a shutter speed of 1/160th of a sec at F4.9 and ISO 100.

That image is heavily cropped though as the moon looked lost in the middle :)

Yeah that's the kind of shot i wanted! :) I've tried longer exposure time & the moon wasn't showing details (surface etc.) at all... btw, is shutter speed related to exposure compensation since my cam has no control over shutter speed. Total noob in digicam and all ... ;) Would ISO help in taking a better shot?

Thanks all for ur tips!

Agree, I think you'll have trouble exposing for the surf and the moon.

I was having trouble with moon pictures using an Ixus and found it works best to trick the exposure by locking the focus inside on a bright light then going out to take the shot. The moon also turns out alot smaller than you imagine, even using 3x zoom. Managed the following using binoculars (something I learnt from this forum) which also cuts down the amount of incident light. Don't ask me to get the surf as well though!

Good luck

I have been taking moon pictures with my A60 and this is what I got. I will update it soon. (Note: In some pictures the moon looks green. This is because of the clouds and *maybe* (just a guess) light pollution. Link: http://gallery47083.fotopic.net/c124568.html

i have found that IXUS 400 is equipped with shuttle speed control mode.
first of all you have to "on" your long shutter setting then you can adjust it.
