I think that a macro slide is simply a manual slide with a lock screw. A focus rail is a geared drive (rack&pinion or lead screw) that will provide quick and precise positioning.

A slider is faster, a screw operated rail is more precice.

great, so for agitated insects and butterflyes, I should go for a macro slider. but with the short DOF , being less pricice is a matter. I guess with practice, improving precision is possible.
anyone with experienced brand I can go for? I admit I like the magnesium vebon Macro Slider, but this is just from Ads, no real test.
will it hold the setting : (10D/ 100mm Macro/ Twin lite MT-24EX)?
thanks for the precious help

I use the Velbon. I have no issues with it at all.

The Velbon Macro Slide works very well. It uses a rack & pinion. The sideways adjustment is handier than I expected. It isn't something you would carry in your camera bag every day.
