had the distinct pleasure of seeing The Ex play the other night...had seen 'em once over 10 ten years ago, when they opened for Sonic Youth. they are longtime (since '79) anarcho/punks w/ some gripping, electric music. the lighting was very good, but i wished i had a wider lens than 30mm, as it was very difficult to get some shots at times...also, terrie and andy moved around very quickly, liked caged beasts, so i left the camera on AF Servo for the night.

First and last are very nice... I like #4 as well, but the OoF highlights left are so-so.
Whole series brings across the band very well! Good job.

thanks René - i should really learn the burn/dodge tool to tone down the high-tone bokeh from #4; hadn't even considered doing that, and it's a very valid critique. thanks!

I like 1 & 4. Agree that it would be nice if the background on 4 didn't stand out as much as it does. Great job.

I really like: #1 drummer katherina...it's a good action shot in B&W...#3 and w/o bullhorn...is a real good close up, was this the 30mm as well?...#6 this drummer shot is well lit, framed and has great show colors...#8 (one last one of Andy; had a few others i was considering)...is my favorite of the bunch...
Great shooting Narlus...

Yeah...dido on #4...If you dodged out some of those prominent bokeh highlights, that guitar would pop out even more...

Narlus, let's not get into burning and dodging and all those other wild machinations ... it makes my head swim ... I used to do that with film. I love the drummer. Hey, wasn't it you that was going to do me a thread of female something-or-other players? If so, I have missed it entirely. I admit to falling in love three or four times a day ... did it with my new physical therapist today ... she's checking out my Achilles tendon and I'm hitting on her! :-) Well, I would but she was less than half my age (although very cute) and had a doctorate ... much too clever a girl for me and my wife and daughter wouldn't let me date her anyway. :-)

dwight, i figured you might think Katherina was cute, so just for you here's an early xmas gift (she came out from behind the drums to sing a hungarian folk song @ the front mic):

i don't recall planning on doing a female-centric thread, but that does give me sort of an idea...more later!

I like the composition of #5 a lot (I do a lot of framing with OoF other band member too), but it seems a bit oversharpened. Nice backlighting in it too. The Nissen bokah in 4 doesn't bother me as it did someone else. That must've been the Sigma?

Fantastic stuff - I would have airbrushed up the nose in number 3 just to be kind but apart from that - FANTASTIC - thanks for posting.

thanks everyone.
valerie, the resizing algorithm that zenfolio uses could have contributed to the oversharpening a bit, but i was probably at fault as well. plus, the way andy's strum hand is situated makes it look a bit funny (w/ his thumb kinda behind his palm).
#4 was taken w/ the canon 50mm f/1.4
