I am on pins and needles too. And before anyone gets an attitude like I saw in another thread about me being some money tossing, snotty photographer well, my wife and I work very, very hard for every freaking dollar spent on all our cameras and lenses. I am not posting this to hold over anyone's head, but came here to share my good news with people I consider to be my friends.

When I got my D60 I never imagined that I'd ever spend anywhere near that much for a camera. Then we got the 10D and now all the lenses we have. And no, they are not all L-glass. And now I am spending over $4,000 for another camera. I cannot list the price but there is no large discounts out there on this camera. The demand is high and the price listed is not MSRP. MSRP on this camera would be $7,000-$8,000 I am sure, but Canon does not list their cameras that way anymore. The $4595 is the Minimum Advertised Price. You will not find the camera for much under that, if at all.

Makes me freaking nervous!! We'll both have to work very hard, and hopefully bring in a few more dollars off our photography, but we will pay this off in 6 months. You will notice that it does not say CASH, but it says DISCOVER CARD.

We are not rich. We must budget too and buy incrementally like most other folks do. I don't mean to get religious on you all here but we do thank God every day of how fortunate we are, and by reading this forum as of late, many of you have forgotten that. That is part of the reason I have stayed away from the forum lately is because of the flaming I have seen.

To me it doesn't matter of you have a D-Rebel a D30, 10D or 1Ds. We're all pretty fortunate to be able to spend that kind of money on something as frivalous as a camera.

I don't know if it's 'that time of the month' or a 'full moon' or 'spring fever' or what, but let's get this forum back on course and get back to photography and having fun.

And Tom: The above has nothing to do whatsoever with your 'show off' comment. We know each other better than that. This stems from another thread here.

Anyway, I can hardly wait to get my hands on this baby and see what it can do!!! I know this will improve my sports shooting greatly with faster, bigger, better everything!

And that being said, unless i get some killer offer for the D60 I plan on converting that to an IR camera in the near future.

Your congratulatory gift basket is on the way :D

The worst part now is the anticip ........................... ation

The best part about waiting for a camera this time of year? Especially in the Pacific Northwest? The weather is cloudy and rainy. That way all those dots in your word: anticip ........................... ation don't seem so freaking long!!

I am also fortunate that I only had to wait about 3 weeks for my D60 when the wait was 3 months and I got my 10D in less than 5 days last May.

I think we're looking to the beginning/mid-April for the MKII. I should find out next when when my rep gets in touch with Canon.

Congratulations, Jim:
You are the recipient of the first email I've written on the new PC. This is the part I hate, because I've had to spend the last few hours loading Office, about a million Windows XP security updates, setting Outlook for email, and myriad other things before I can even think about installing the newe graphics card, loading Photoshop, and having some fun.

Anyone that begrudges you that camera for real has serious problems. What the hell? You're in the business. I suspect that someday I, too, will move up from the 10D, but considering I haven't learned how to take a decent snapshot yet, it's a little difficult to justify. Besides, if I don't quit bouncing my lenses of the tarmac, I'm goin to be spending my money for other things.

Congratulations on the new addition. We'll all be waiting for the official birth announcememt in a couple months.

Thos.

I wish they still had the 'thumbs up' emoticon. This would be a great place and time for it.

I am going to the FOCUS show next week (a big UK photo show) and I hope that Canon bring a 1D mk2 for us to play with and check out. They usually bring all the new toys if the UK head office have actually got any yet.

It sounds like enough of a step up in performance from my D30 to be worth serious consideration - but I may still wait a while in the hope that the street price falls eventually.

In the meantime, hope you like your new toy and please let us know how you get on and what you think of it.

It's a dirty business, but somebody's got to do it.

It's amazing how quickly a $4,000+ camera can turn you from one of 'us' to one of 'them.' (Yes, I know Timmy is kidding.) People only have to be familiar with your work to understand that you're a serious photographer. As such, they should expect you to be serious about your equipment, too. I wasn't here when the 10D came out. Was there the same jealousy then?

I dont think you should even explain all this. Even if you were not a pro photographer (as I assume you are) and just wanted to buy this camera for a vacation snapshots, it's still your money and you can do with it all you want. I dont see how somebody can approve or disapprove you one way or another.

Jim,

Congrats Man! I can't imagine the anticipation you're experiencing right now (I tried, but we don't have a crash cart on hand so I had to back off the excitement :)).

I like your work as it is; it'll be interesting to see if the MKII improves your image quality or just makes it easier for you to get there (perhaps both!?). All around, we're all waiting for 'one of us' to get their hands dirty and live the dream!

Good for you!

LOL! Thanks for all the great, humorous comments! That's the POTN forum that I know and love!

If I could I would have everyone over for a BBQ for the official unveiling. That would be so awesome to meet up with everyone. So far I have met and shot with one member here and I suspect another local from Hillsboro (sorry forget your nick right now) will join us at the USSBA events and maybe some others at Portland International Raceway. That'll be just too much fun!!! And I have some possible business ideas for us to discuss when we meet up.

Anyway, I am not pro, but semi-pro. I am being published this summer sometime. Probably May/June. That will actually be my first official publication. I am also looking to become official photographer of the USSBA as they start off their 2004 season in May, so I am getting there and I tellya it takes a lot of time and effort to make all that stuff happen. For spots to open up in sports photography someone has to literally die. It's a very, very, VERY tough market out there and I have great respect for anyone who has made it. And even when you 'make it' it does not make the work any easier and just adds to the pressure to perform.

But man, it is freaking fun!

And as I said in a previous post no one said anything nasty to me about getting this camera. I wanted to be the one to say it first that I am not buying this camera for status on the board or anywhere else. It's a necessity.

That being said we will still, be using the 10D and D60 cameras in our business. They still have great use in them and do not produce any less quality pictures than they did last month before the announcment of the new MKII. I plan on converting the D60 to IR use eventually and my wife will take over the 10D and it will then also serve as a backup to the 1D. Sure I'd love to have 2 MKII's but that certainly is not in our current budget.

Now if I can get published a few more times in 2004 then that may become a different story indeed. So, the MKII will not transport me over to some professional forum and have me snubbing my nose at you guys. Not be any stretch of the imagination.

I wish you all too could get MKII's! Actually if you wait 3-4 years the same level camera will probably be in the $2000 range or less!!

Thank you all!

You can adopt me.
I come almost fully house broken and with my own a**.
In fairly good health and have nothing that a couple of shots of penicillin cannot cure. (monthly)
Will live in the basement (as long as there is a modem jack and a 42" plasma screen)
Hell I'd even live in the back yard in a tent. :!:
Have valid International Drivers licence (They haven't caught me yet)
I'm sure the wife would call it a deal if you offered her the last 3 years back issues of Martha Stewart Living (classic jailhouse reading) and a Kodiak Instamatic.
Just a though to help out a friend.

Of course you are welcome here, but in the spirit of full disclosure, there are a few things I need to mention:
1. No basements here. In fact, we don't even have crawlspaces. Literally everything here is on a concrete slab. I don't know why.
2. You might have to bring your own 42" plasma screen. We're on the market for one, but can't justify it till our big screen gives up the ghost. It goes pretty much nonstop during waking hours and is generally tuned to E! (Entertainment), Celebrity Biography channel, or any show that deals with Princess Di specifically, or the Royal Family in general. (My wife secretly wishes the British had put down the rebellion.)
3. An instamatic will make no points with my wife.....it's much too complex for her level of photographic skills.
4. Valid international driver's license? If you can convince the authorities that you speak Spanish only, they won't expect you to have any license at all.
5. Living in the backyard in a tent is actually a reasonable plan except for June, July, August, and September. Is it possible to air condition a tent?
6. I think I'm only about 8 or 9 nears older than you. My wife is a couple years younger than I am. Having an adult son that's already a grandfather would make us great-grandparents. Going from 'no children' to 'great garndparenthood' in one leap might be a little hard to manage.

Anyway, I'm willing to negotiate. Please send more pictures of your wife.

Congrats! Can hardly wait for your first couple of racing pictures from the new cam. Hopefully you'll be able to squeeze in some motorcycle road racing pictures, too! :D

Thanks PaceAce! It's a very good possibility that the first race photos could be bikes. One of our members here is a motorcycle racer and the season opens up at PIR in April. Probably about the time I get the camera.

Jim,

Good on you. Get that sucker unpacked and test shots up as soon as it arrives.

But don't forget us amateurs with our cheapo 10D POS cameras when you move up to the "1 Club". :D :D :D

Cheers

That's why I posted what I did. I still have the 10D and the D60. This will still be my fave photo hangout.

Thanks! The image quality will be better, but how much is anyone's guess at this point. Canon is still finalizing the firmware. One thing for sure is that it will be most definitely easier to get the photos I want. Everything will be faster and I'll have the huge buffer and FPS on my side.

One thing sure: There will be no excuses now for not getting The Shot.

I can swing it but I would want to sell my 5 month old 10D, BigEd and extra battery (or my wife would probably leave me). I don't need a backup.

Any idea how much I could get for all of that?

Pretty much what you paid for the 10D alone, if it's in great shape with low shutter count. See the marketplace here, or the Fred Miranda buy/sell forum is very active.

Congrats Jim! You're not a money-tossing bitch! Whoever might think that is just plain clueless! You're making money of photographing, and I take it that photography is something you enjoy much as a hobby too. First of all, you can justify camera-gear expenses since you'll earn money from it in the long run. And if beeing a personal hobby as well, you can probably justify spending a little more $$$Â*than you would if it just happened to be something you where good at but didn't enjoy.

Although the price can't be compared to my 10D, I'm the money-tossing bitch compared to you. I got a 10D but doesn't earn one little dime from it. Now that's a really bad investment compared to your 1D :)

By the way. My sisters x-boyfriend dropped by with his new camera some nights ago. So I tried it out a bit, it was friggin awsome! :-D It was the (don't shoot, don't shoot I know it's like cursing in the Church) Nikon D2H! The rush of feeling 8fps (8.5 for you ;)) rage through the camera when pressing the shutter is just ... well I don't have words =D Anyway, I had to have proof for holding the cam, so he took my 10D and snatched a picture while I was playing with his D2H, look at my *GRIIIIIN* ;)

http://www.vvizard.net/pics/vvizard/d2h.jpg

And toying around with the MK-II with it's superior specs I guess would be even more incredible :) We all have a part inside ourself envying you your new camera, but we don't think you don't deserve it. We consider you a friend to :) Happy shooting Jim! And be sure to fix the insurance on that cam pretty quick ;)

vvizard: Thanks! I wouldn't mind playing with a Nikon just for grins. And yes I am so looking forward to getting this camera. I was just reading the specs and they're pretty overwhelming.

CDS: Yeah!!! I expect to see this feature on the 10D MKII later this year. Another cool thing (among so many) is that you can save your personal settings to CF. That way if you have to send it in for service, you can save your settings and restore them back later. There are so many cool features to the MKII.

Ok, Jim, now a most important part of the process - the independent review and certification of the new equipment, performed by CoolToolGuy Technical Services. There are two specific events which will allow for the proper certification;

http://gorace.com/jefferson500/main.html

and

http://www.12hoursatthepoint.org/

The first event is a vintage race, and will insure that the equipment can capture the graceful lines and varying shapes that occur with vintage racecraft. The second is a twelve-hour race that will verify the equipment's accuracy in all light levels, including dark.

The verification should be performed by CTS, and you can come with the equipment or ship it to CTS - your choice. :) :D

Seriously, good luck with it - but if you can make Summit point...

Do any of you guys know of a race that is about the same time and location as the Reno Air Races? (12th September)

I have had a 'scheme' for a few years to rent a camper for a couple of weeks and take in some good landscape locations and the races, but I also do a fair a fair bit of motor sport photography here in the UK and a US race or two would be interesting.

Maybe this year I will actually implement my plan. So any advice on events and locations to visit (within driving distance of Reno) would be appreciated.

Not in any particular order...

1. To win the $1 million lotto
2. To find out I have a millionaire relative who just passed away recently and left me with all his money...or at least enough to buy a 1DII and a couple of L lenses.
3. To be in a dream where I just plunked down a bunch of cash for a 1DII and never waking up from the dream.

So much for peddling useless junk. No takers.

I talked to Eddie and he was very nice and mentioned that they expected delivery in somewhere around four weeks or less. Promised not to charge the plastic until it shipped. $4499 is the price plus shipping.

I've been dealing with them since 1978 when I ordered my Canon A1 system. A year ago last November I ordered the new 24-70 lens and they swore it wouldn't be shipped until mid December. Lo and behold it shipped on November 30. I think it was because they didn't want to wait to bill me in the New Year.

This one camera body is costing more than my entire Canon A2E system purchased in 1996 when the A1s were stolen. Ah progress. I have no idea how many they expect in the first shipment but I think I was one of the first 100 to order. No promises.

CDS has one on order too. I also called my dealer about that time (Super Bowl) to let them know I would be buying the camera. They didn't have a waiting list at that time as they didn't even know the Canon part number yet! They got it from Canon shortly after that and the rest is history. I am also thinking April, and that's fine. I don't have anything major going on until April anyway.

I have had a firm order (with deposit) with Park Cameras in the UK since the 9th Feb.

They are quoting mid to late April for delivery. They have a number of Canon people coming to the shop with all the Canon new kit including the Mk2 on 23rd March

(see http://www.parkcameras.com/events/eos1diiday.htm )

Do any of you know if there is any sort of international distribution priority, I know that the US will be getting the lions share of Canons output but will they be getting a start of there allocation b4 Europe?

Patience was never my strong point
