Well, I did it. I just ordered the 17-40 f/4L! After looking at the threads on lens comparisons I think it may just be the best one for me, and at least it's one of the least expensive. Dell had a 15% off sale so that helped too! Now I just hold my breath till it gets here! Okay, maybe not the whole time, but it'll be here before Christmas, and that's what I really wanted. Just can't wait to use it, and see if I can manage to get pics as sharp as some of those posted in the threads.

I will soon enter the ranks of the 17-40 'ers. I've already been bitten by the "L " disease. There is no turning back!

That was my first...and only "L" that I have. I admit I might use it a little too much compared to maybe a lesser lens at the right focal length. I bought it because I wanted a landscape lens, but I found it to be a great indoor camera. With the short focal lenth, it has a ton of DOF wide opened. I can bounce my EX550 flash and get come great shots.

Or for doing some goofy portraits! On the long end and the 1.6x crop factor, it actually doesn't really even seem that distorted as you might think. I guess 40mm isn't that far from 50mm which is what I like for my portrait lens.

Nothing to be terrified about. It's just part and parcel of the rites of passage into the world of Lcoholism. In this world, we bite off more than we can chew and buy things that are more expensive than our budget will allow.

But it's all good. Congratulations on your new lens...a wonderful classic from what I've read, though I've never used it myself.

I bought it a couple years ago and I've only been outside once...had to use it for something. :-P Sometimes I just like wear the camera with this lens on...even if I'm not taking pictures. Sometimes I'll hold it up just a little bit so that someone will notice that it has a red line...sometimes. :-P

Funny guy, great photos! I may have to try that too, except no one I'm around will really notice the red line. I may just have to point it out to them.

It really was the versatility that I saw in this lens when I looked at the forum thread on lenses that helped me decide on the 17-40. Okay, well that, and the price.

Here's a question for those that have been bittten. How long between the purchase of your first L and the second did you end up waiting?

My first L as well and for many others because of it's attractive price gets you an L experience at a low price then it's down hill for there you'll want more Ls L stands for loss of income.

Little bit faster. Cut my teeth on the 24-105 f/4L IS, two weeks later I was back at the dealer to tell them I wanted a 17-40 to go with it

I shoot full frame so the 17 is my ultrawide, and the 24 is my standard zoom. However the 17 is magnificent on a crop camera as well, where it becomes a standard zoom.

Lori, congratulations on the new lens.. L stands for "Leave the Wallet with Canon" :p

You will eventually want a longer zoom and the 70-200 (all L series) will call you.. just as they called me.... :D my other two are 70-200 and 100-400.

My first was the 70-200 f4, then the 17-40 f4, and finally the 300 f4. All on a 400d. Though I am looking at primes at the moment...;)
