As far as i know, you should be able to use all lenses. Check your book and see what that error means.

Error84 is a Lens Communication Error.
How old is the Sigma? Have you successfully used it on another EOS, and if so which one? In general, you should be able to use any correctly designed EF-compatible lens.
One possibility is that Sigmas are designed using "reverse-engineering" to get the correct connections to the camera, without paying a licence fee to Canon - however, if Canon introduce new or changed features, sometimes Sigma lenses no longer work properly. This happened when the EOS30 was introduced, and some Sigma lenses had to be rechipped.
Another is that the lens just isn't fast enough to react to instructions from the camera. My Vivitar 100mm macro is like this, auto-bracketing is out - it just doesn't open the aperture in time to react to the cameras next instruction, Err84.
The last possibility is that the lens is faulty - I had a Tokina 19-35 that gave me Err84 all the time. it got replaced and the replacement is just fine.
