Been searching but can't find it here. Am I going crazy? Did I see that there is an upgrade path from the 10D to the Mark II for $1299? Are there instructions somewhere how to do this?

Thanks

I think someone is pulling your leg.. You are asking if there is a firmware upgrade to convert your 10D to a 1DmkII? That would be impossible as the camera internals are completely different.

Are you asking if you can turn in your used 10D and have them hand you a brand new 1DmkII for $1299? I suppose that would be possible for a limited number as a marketing ploy for a company who would need to boost sales, but for a Canon? The waiting lists are backing up at $4500US, so why in the world would they?

Or maybe I just don't understand the upgrade path to which you are referring.

The later - Turn in your 10D and $1299 and get a Mark II back...

That was a couple of joke posts in the PMA sticky thread. Be ready to part with around $4500 if you want the MKII.

Sorry, I'm the guy that posted that $1299 post. I was sure everyone would know it was joke especially since I through the "It's available from Dell" sentence in there. Apparantly there were a couple of people that took it seriously.

I guess I fell for that. The funny part is the two other guys I told about the "Upgrade program"!

Oh dear. The guy I talked to at Dell (said his name was 'Sean,' even though he had a distinct Indian accent) told me to send $1,299 cash to a P.O. box in New Delhi. He even told me I could keep the 10D until I get the Mk II.

It all sounds on the up and up to me.

Thos.

While this upgrade path was a bit farfetched, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if Canon were to do a promotion with the DRebel. "Bring us your P&S "fill in the blank" and receive a discount. Just a taste of the drug to start a person on the path of L glass, and let the addiction run its natural course.

OK, I realise the upgrade post was a joke... but here's a serious question. Why doesn't Canon offer upgrades? It would seem simple enough and there is even a precedent...

From the Kodak Q&As on their new "Pro SLR/n".
Can an existing Pro 14n be upgraded to use the same sensor as the Pro SLR/n?
Yes! Existing Pro 14n customers will be able to have the CMOS sensor upgraded to the sensor used in the Pro SLR/n. This upgrade includes the new sensor and new analogue electronics. It does not upgrade the digital electronics of the camera. Upgraded Pro 14n cameras will have the same image quality and ISO range as the Pro SLR/n cameras.

I can think of one reason... cynical marketing. Others?

Kodak's upgrade is sensor only. Other than that the 'new' camera is the same. None of Canon's dSLRs can be upgraded as there is much, much more changes in the camera from say a D30-D60, D60-10D, 1D-1D MKII.

And the fact that Canon doesn't have to do upgrades to keep customers.
