I have a 256 Mb Viking Compact Flash Card that is not recognized by my camera or any other camera. I tried formatting the card and creating a new partition but it still isn't readable. What can I do before I try to send it back? Has this ever happened in your experience?

It sounds like you format it with your computer which dould not work. You need to format it with your camera for it to work.

The camera won't even recognize that the card is in. Digital cameras operate on FAT16 And PCs operate on FAT32. I tried reformatting on FAT16 with the Sandisk Imagemate. However, from what I've read formatting to Fat16 needs a PCMCIA Compact Flash Adapter. I guess I'll just return the card back to the dealer.

I didn't have this problem with the card until I used it to full capacity with video and numerous pictures. It must have been defective.

I sent the card back to Amazon.com today. The new one should be in my hands by tomorrow.

I tried reformatting the card in XP, 98 SE and 98 ME in FAT 16 to no avail. It's good that Amazon has an excellent customer service dept.

I don't know how the S400 formats, but my Rebel formats cards with a couple extra directories containing files in addition to the directory where it stores pictures. Formatting with the PC would remove those directories, possibly rendered the card unreadable by the camera...

Just an idea.

There is canon folder on the card. It must save user data and other things. Will save a back up in the future.
