I have a question for all you guys and girls out there who are lucky enough to own some serious collections of photography gear.

This is a hypothetical situation, however my question is, if tomorrow you were to wake up and all your gear was gone and you were told that from now on you were allowed only to own a Canon 400D and one L series lens of your choice, which lens would you choose?

*nightmare*

I guess it would be 70-200 f4L IS...
because you could still get EF-S 17-55 & 85 f1.8 which are not L :)
OK, I cheated

Eeeeeek,

Answer A, the 1200mm f5.6, which I would then sell and use the cash to replace the collection.

Answer B, It depends on what you shoot, but probably the 24-70 2.8 (tho its hard not to pick the 70-200 2.8 IS or the 16-35 2.8 )

All the best

Realistically speaking, probably the 24-105 again. Very versatile zoom range for everyday usage.

Assuming only 1 lens, effectively turning a SLR into a P&S, the most versatile would have to be the 28-300L. That'd create a giant P&S fit for the most occasions photography-wise. The IQ is pretty decent too according to photozone (http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/canon_28300_3556/index.htm). Or its earlier incarnation as the 35-350L if you're willing to sacrifice some wide end for some extra reach.

Not an easy question. The trouble here is the crop factor of the 400D. On a 1D or any other 1.3X crop camera I would take a 28-300mmL without question.

But on a 400D, I would probably get a 16-35mm f/2.8. This of course assumes that I could only have one lens for the 400D, and it has to be an L lens, and that we cannot sell this setup to trade for anything else.

But if I could only have 1 L lens and still have a chance to own other non-L lenses, then I might pick the 400mm f/2.8L IS.

28-300L for only one lens that is... i had a Xti briefly, and that lens was pretty cool on it. A little large, but nice.

That would be the 35/1.4 then, I suppose...

70-200mm L 2.8 IS............Awesome; but not practical for all occassion.
I would then add the 24-70mm L 2.8
