This turned up on a local lake and caused quite a stir. They aren't often seen in these parts and go down as a 'rarity'. I was glad to have got some shots - even happier that my 6 year old son game with me and enjoyed it immensely. even acting as a tripod! :)

Great shots of the loon. Looks very cold there as well.

Dennis - freezing is the word! At one point the rain lashed down and I stood over my son acting like an umbrella - he said "I've had fun Dad, but can we go now. The rain has made my undies soggy!" :D:D:D

Nice shots Damian - but tell me how did you get the tripod bush into your son's head?

Well I'm going to patent this and call it a Ear-sidekick! :) :) So you'll have to wait to see the designs!

A 6 year old who can act as a tripod? That implies standing still and is therefore another rarity ;):) Oh, and the bird is great too. Congrats!

He's very serious about his wildlife and can stay still for a good while. He does a good line in crouching down and crawling behind bushes too!

Great shots Damian!

Thanks Paul. I liked the one of it eating a crab - looks like it was putting up a fight! :)

Thanks Rob. From what I understand they are rare and unusual to see one next to a main road anyway! ;) They spend most of the time out at sea but this one seems to like lake!

Very nice Damian. A touch of fill flash might have helped the first tow shots but I'd still be pleased to have them in my collection.

Thanks Stephen. I think if I'd used fill flash and the bird had flown off the people who had gathered to see it would not have been happy!

If you'd used a flash you'd have taken the place of the diver in the lake, I reckon - it's a much photographed bird!

Excellent images, Damian.

Thanks Keith and Paul. Keith I reckon I'd have got some nice shots of the bottom of the lake if I'd used a flash! ;)
