On stage dance-50 1.8?

I am shooting a dance and play and have full access during dress rehersals to shoot. No flash. Can I get good shots with the inexpensive 50 1.8?

Right now I have the 70-300 IS and it is a struggle to get good pictures in the low light.

I use the Thrifty 50 in allot of my shots. It is ok, but sometimes the focus is a little off and slow. If you can afford it go with the 1.4 version.
