View Full Version : SD600 light streaks on LCD viewer #@#$!!

I finally upgraded from my old trusty 2002 Canon 2 mpixel model (with tiny LCD display size) to this. SD600 LCD display is quantum leaps in improvements to say the least.

But I just noticed last night that when I point the camera in the vicinity (not directly at) of bright light sources (parking lot lamps), the LCD display shows vertical whitish/purplish light streaks (straight lines reaching from top to bottom of the display). When I point the camera directly at the lamps, the intensity and width of those streaks grew bigger with the lamps now big twinkling blubs. Even the 75 watt bulbs at home produced this effect (to a lesser degree). I turned down the brightness of the display but these lines didn't disappear.

Does anybody else with SD600 (and similar models) have this annoyance? Doesn't seem like this is a model-wide problem from googling and searching this forum.

I should say that the pictures themselves are fine, but I am leery of this being a precursor to a more serious display problem and I am hoping an exchange for another SD600 will solve this.

Could it be a case of the (known) faulty CCD (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=238911)?

Thanks for that sticky but my problem seemed a bit different in that the recorded image was fine. Just the display with those strange vertical streaks/lines caused by bright light sources at night...

I will probably exchange this for another SD600 although if this is a model-wide problem, I might as well keep it as pictures turned out good.

I've had similar happen with both my S3 and old A95, I think it's just the LCD not being able to handle strong light. But I could be wrong.

I've seen the same thing with my A80 and S3 so I wouldn't worry. However, I wonder if the sensor could be damaged by direct sunlight for too long. I was shooting some sunset shots a few months ago and when I zoomed in with the sun filling a majority of the frame the LCD went berserk. Instead of just light streaks/pillars, the entire screen went psychedelic and scared the crap out of me. After that I haven't noticed any problems, but it was still very strange.

I've also noticed vertical lines on my S3 LCD screen. As I recall, it was on the left side.

I have noticed the same thing on my SD600, the LCD picks up excess light, the pictures are fine, I think as you look and move away from your light source, it goes away, its no big deal for me....

I just want to add another datapoint. I got to try out SD900 and I noticed the same light streaks. As others already confirmed, looks like this is just the way Canon digi displays work.

I am not totally convinced that this is a benign thing but since the pictures aren't affected, I guess I have to learn to live with it. Hopefully, no recalls in the future for SD600.:-|

It is annoying but it is harmless, at least for normal intensity lights (do not point carelessly to the sun or to a welding arc though). I post this in other forum about the same issue on a Pro1:

It is a typical behavior of CCD image sensors to “contaminate” the entire column of pixels where a bright spot occurs.
With a second digital camera, it is possible to make a picture of the viewfinder or LCD, but I have just one, so I simulated what I saw in the viewfinder while shot this picture.

The band is not visible in the static picture, while in a movie you can see it, because it is a dynamic effect.
