Well, I promised Dwight and others I'd post some pics if I liked anything out of this shoot..

I lied....don't like any of 'em :o

But, culled a few that didn't disgust me too much:

http://tomduggan.com/1206mpch/

Band: Monte's Python

I work with the bass player (leader), rythm guitarist (my boss!), lead guitarist (didn't play this gig) and an "auxilliary" singer (didn't sing this gig).

Venue: Carriage Clubhouse at the Paramus Golf Club, Paramus, NJ

In other words, a @*#$& dining room! LOL!

Equipment: 2 Canon 20Ds

Borrowed 24-70 with 550EX, LumiQuest Pocket Bouncer with ProMax gold insert with the ProMax flap diffuser.
(that's why the white balance SUCKED!)

Stuck a Sigma EM-140 DG ring flash on a 28-135 for a few shots on the 2nd 20D.

Went no flash and ISO 3200 with the 24-70, 28-135 and a Nifty Fifty for some other shots.

Band just went on hiatus since either they're all pregnant or just had kids....

Only other performing arts I'll have the opportunity to shoot is an open mike a few of my other coworkers perform at....

Never been to that venue, but I've seen pictures...I think I'm doomed there as well :D

So....have at it....

I know what I want to do next time, but not sure there's going to be a next time!

This is an interesting pictorial review of a band...

It's very impressive to see a considerable variety of subjects that comprise an evening, at a local venue performance...Your pictures are well framed...and a pleasant compilation of everyone at the show...

I'll be in that very same area most of the day, tomorrow...

Are you sure you're looking at MY images???

LOL!

Thank you for your kind words John....

Their venues are rough, to say the least.

As far as I'm concerned, I haven't done the band justice yet.

They seem to like the images (perhaps snorting Drano and heroin helps? ;) ), but I'm not getting what my "mind's eye" sees yet...

The operative word here being "yet".....

I guess I'm lucky in the fact that I can pretty much go anywhere on "stage" and get the angles I want.

I'm still looking for a place with decent lighting!

What will you be doing in near Parumus?

I work in Carlstadt, NJ but live "upstate" NY
near West Point....

Thanks again...

knowing most NJ clubhouses (i live in bergen county a third of the year), custom whitebalance is a must... if whitebalance is still off, use a bounced flash to warm up the lighting a bit (don't use it for main source unless absolutely needed)

looks like whitebalance was the only problem you had in the other shots i've seen

Thanks for the feedback....

I purposely left them "warm" because I was tired of seeing "normal" fleshtones...

Now, call it lack of experience on my part, or poor technique, or whatever, but when I look at band images, I don't really want to see "normal" lighting....

And, I learned my lesson bouncing off of slanted ceilings

I'm not discounting the critique...believe me, every little bit helps!

I don't know my NJ counties from a hole in the wall (and been working down here for the past 18 yrs!!!!)...they normally play the White Horse in Little Falls....ever been there?

Next "gig" is a while off at Daley's in Secaucus

Thanks again for the comments....

Link doesn't work. Way to go there, Mr. Programmer. ;)

White balance trouble? Ever heard of ACR? Something called a WB dropper?

Dr. Jak, the thread is a little old so he probably let it go.
