for some reason, flash shots with the 420EX attached are not working ... the flash fires, but the photo is WAY underexposed .. like the flash was finished before the shutter opened ???
camera was set on "P" mode
any clues as to whats happening ?
when I use the built-in flash on the camera everything works normally ??
HELP!!

You probably already checked this, but maybe the flash exposure is set too low?

flash exposure is set to 0
the camera works great by itself, but as soon as the 420EX is attached ... the flash shots are WAY underexposed

i've tried some experiments, and the flash fires about 1 second before the shutter opens

took the flash into the "authorized canon dealer" .. they tried the flash on a Canon film body ... worked fine, so they say the problem is with my G3 ... aaaarrrgggghhh

Have you tried some other settings on your G3?
For example higher ISO values like 200 or 400.
I have an experience recently using my G3 w/ 420EX in an indoor dim light situation that the photos were underexposed if my ISO was set too low (say 50/100).
Just an idea to see if it helps, I am just a novice in photography. :P

Just curious as to how they knew it worked fine? If you have the same problem as noted in the other thread, then the flash will still operate. Did the flash's greenlight illuminate, indicating a proper exposure?

with 420 EX, i never set my G3 on P mode..
I always set on auto mode or TV mode
for these 2 modes, u must set flash adjusment (at menu option) into AUTO

Do you mean 'Av mode' when you said 'auto mode'? I don't know how you can change flash adjustment in 'auto mode' when it's set to ON by default and no option to change it in the menu.

Do you mean 'Av mode' when you said 'auto mode'? nope, it`s auto mode not AV mode .. why i prefer choose this auto mode ?? because this auto gives u 1/60 and 2.0 to your G3 plus a good auto calculation flash from 420EX .. I don't know how you can change flash adjustment in 'auto mode' when it's set to ON by default and no option to change it in the menu.u right, in auto mode u can`t change flash adjusment... but in another mode (TV,P,AV) u can change flash adjusment to auto..
Why i never set to P or AV when using 420 EX ??? cause 420 EX E-TTL system doesn`t work with G3 ..
with this 2 mode, G3 always gives a lower speed (lower than 1/10 sec.) to match the aperture that u set
