These are my first 'proper' live pics, taken at the Basement in August this year (awesome club venue) with reasonably good lighting... I was lucky enough to have permission from the Promoter as well as Dave himself to take photos, and they ended up being published in Australian DrumScene magazine, albeit uncredited!
I also got to meet Dave and the Band and he said there's a free pass for me to any future Australian shows when they come back :)
Note that there has been no post-work done to these shots - they are exactly how the camera captured them...
C&C welcome!

Really nice clear photos, but to me they lack sole, they dont really tell me anything, they seem a little clinical. There seems to be a lack of emotion in them. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with them I just like to see a little more passion in my pics - and WHY uncredited ?

I know what you mean - I think it was a couple of things; it was my first 'proper' shoot and i was more concerned about everything working properly rather than getting the best 'moment' captured... also the venue was at capacity (and its a cabaret style place with tables for dinner etc) so getting decent placement was difficult.
As for not getting credited, I told the publisher that I was happy for the photos to be used in the mag for free on the condition I was credited - in all honesty I'm not sure what I should do to correct this - any ideas? I can't really go back now 4 months later and request payment.... or should I?

This is where you should have a paper contract - at this stage there really is nothing you can do especially if you want to do more work for them - I HOPE this was a loss leader and you dont want to work for free all the time as that takes income away from photographers who would normally be paid to do the shoot your willing to do for free - I have done the same thing but on a one off basis and in 99% of the cases I have received paid work on a regular ongoing basis.
One of the things I do in that situation is tell them to hire there normal photog, and have me there for free, compare images and if they like my stuff use me next time - that way I am taking nothing away from the other photogs and they can judge my images for what they are worth. - I have done this a HELL of a lot in the sporting world and ended up with contracts with 48 newspapers and 3 clubs.
As for your problem, just get a few mince pies, some eggnog a nice glass of whiskey and enjoy christmas and dont worry about it - let it go after 4 months.

OK, David, time to move your Gear List to the Gear List thread! I agree with your advice completely. I have no clue who started this business where publications expect free photography of concerts! The magazine editors don't work for free! And we don't have that problem with weddings.
Niq, just keep shooting and posting here along with whatever else you do.

Both were taken with 50mm 1.8 Mark 1 lens.... the best A$85 I ever spent! :)
