Hi guys,
decided that its time to upgrade my trusty Digital Rebel aka 300D, and I am thinking 5D or 1D. I know the 5D has a full frame sensor and 12.8mp and the 1D (not mk2) has more FPS and apparently shoots in higher resolution?
What I need the cam for is mostly everything however mostly portraits. I don't really need crazy amounts of FPS however priority is focused on image quality more than anything else.
Any help would be deeply appreciated.....particulary from people who may of either owned or used both of these camera's.
Thanks - Sunny.

Just from the things you mentioned, I'd suggest 5D all the way. (I've owned both it and the MKIIN). The MKII doesn't shoot a higher resolution to my knowledge than the 5D. It's faster. The pixel size is the same but the 5D has more on a larger sensor and the IQ is fabulous on it.

You know, if you are looking to buy used(since you consider a 1D), 1DMKII's are going for the low $2K range.
Now aside from that, it seems the portrait type thing would be cooler to have a 5D with.

I would think that based on your stated needs that a 5D is probably going to be your best option.

Ok, hows about 'what things is the 1D better than the 5D for?'
thanks again - Sunny.

1D is the more versatile camera of the two. It is built for photojournalists/sports/action shooters.
Not that the 5D can't handle that, but the 1D series cameras are built for those applications in mind, completely.

I have a 1D at the moment and am trying to sell it. Looking into buying a 20D. Just don't need the extra fps and af-points.
I think you are going to miss the picture-preview-zoom-function if you decide to go for the 1D, which I think is a very nice thing to have because you'll be able to check focus on the eyes and things like that. 5D also has a huge lcd-screen, a big viewfinder and big resolution.
But 5D costs 2 times more than the 1D...........

Is the 5d waterproof/weather protected?

Nope. Nothing of that sort.

It would help to mention that the 5d costs over 2.5x a used 1D would do. Its newer technology so will benefit from lower noise, better battery life etc. Everythings relative to cost, the 1D is great for everything for portraits sports and even in my opinion architecture but alas it hasnt got the resolution of the 5d but it is much better built and is actually a more customizerable camera. If you really need full frame ( a good thing), you gotta invest in good glass and it doesnt sound like you have done much reading yet so pop over to fredmiranda.com or a whole host of other review sites for more detail. new stuff is expensive and the 1d at its current price is a bargain it costs less than a 30D! I think for the non pro anything above 8Mpix is a waste, files are jus too big and you need better hardware to process.

Hi guys, thanks for everyones feedback on this. i have been looking at various sites and reviews on the varients of 1d's and 5d. i have come to the conclusion that a 1Ds mK1 is probably the best choice as it intergrates the best of both worlds and is great value for money (considering it also has a full frame sensor). i don't really need the super fast shutter for most of my work and it also has 11-mega pixels. On the look out for a good 2nd hand deal at the moment. Also need to get rid of my EF-S 10-22 now as it will not work with it.
What do you guys think? + Anyone with feedback on a 1Ds Mk1 in particular?
Thanks again,
Sunny.

I was honestly going to suggest the exact thing you just said. Why not look at the older 1Ds. You get full frame along with 11MP and considering you want to do portraits it is mainly suited for that. As far as where to find one Check KEH.com or Adorama.com and B&H.com in each of their used departments. You can pretty much find one in any of these three places and they are always popping up.

If you're doing studio portraits, a 1Ds would be great. If you're doing available light, make sure your exposure capabilities are quite good. The 1Ds is not nearly as good at high-ISO noise control. However, it will hold its own in most cases. Enjoy, whichever way you go.

Update : went to my local Jessops store and told them to get a 5D and a 1Ds. Took my lens and CF card and took back to back images in exactly the same settings of the same subject. I found the 5D to be better + it was easier to handle. Stepping up to a 1DsII was out of the question for the value your going to get back (also did the same test with a 1DsII body) therefore went out and got myself a good deal on a mint 5D with battery grip for £1350 (that converts to $2650 US).
The camera is absolutely MINT, to say that I am happy with it is an understatement!
Thanks for everyones input on this thread.
Happy New Year to all!
Bests - Sunny.
