I have had no contest experience and am interested in what yours are. I want to go into one with my eyes open.;)

The only "contest" that I do are the local contry fairs we have in Connecticut. Some have pretty decent photography shows and they are judged... In general I enjoy them and have modest success with some of my B&W still lifes. There are contests on POTN and some other sites but I have not done much with those. Dennis

I recently hada great contest experience. I belong to my local chapter of PPA as well as the PPA. My local club holds a print competition quarterly. The last one they held was the first one I was able to even attend, never seen one before. I had no idea the type/subjects that people typically submit at these things. So I simply followed the rules and blindly submitted one of my images. Turns out that my image was the most different and got a thumbs up from the judges... hopefully not just because it was different but because they liked it as well. But I think the uniqueness helped me out. I had no subject-bias going into it and that worked in my favor. So no contest experience should not keep you away. Go for it and first and foremost do it for the learning experience. Most contest judges will talk about why an image was good or what could make it better and that is where you learn!

Go in with you mind and your ears open! No matter what happens you can get great tips and network with other local artists which will pay off in other areas. My experiance is online contests I never do well but actual framed prints on the other hand... ;)
