Just got my first d-slr (10D) and taking a lot of photo's and having fun. One issue though: I am amazed how slow my Mac is dealing with the photo's...I don't want to sound stupid but is it simply because the file size has gotten huge (most of my shots are at the highest settings for the 10d)? Or is it likely a combination of file size and the speed of my Mac (iMac with 800 G4 and 256K memory). Am I just going to have to deal with the speed issue now that my files have jumped in size (had 2 mg point and shoot before I got my new camera), or is there any better strategy on how to manage the files after taking a lot of pictures? I would prefer not to take an equity line on the house just t purchase a G5 to help with the speed :o .
Thanks for any thoughts or experiences.

Are you connecting the camera directly to your mac?
If so, that is where your bottle-neck is.
If you obtain a CF card reader and use that instead of the camera, I am confident you will notice a significant speed increase.

A card reader will run you about $20 and it makes the process much shorter than downloading from the camera. The first day I had my D60 I went out and played awhile. Came home and downloaded to the PC. The next morning I went and bought a card reader.
Get one!

On the Imac you should have a firewire port, get the Sandisk firewire card reader for around 50 dollars and those transfer speeds are super quick.

I have a similar set up-iMac 800 G4 768MB Ram. I have the Sandisk Firewire Card Reader. The process is pretty quick. Not blazing but quick.

What kind of CF card do you have? I use the standard SanDisc via USB. Would they be faster on Firewire also?

I had a G4 450 w/ 1Gig of RAM using Photoshop 7. I was slow when the images were shot in RAW. Viewing several in the browser was very noticably slow.

I have a 1GB Microdrive CF and a Sandisk 512MB CF Card. Yes, the firewire card reader will be much faster. I formerly used a USB card reader and there is no comparison. Firewire is the way to go.
