I ahve the 120-300 and a 1.4 TC with good results.. turns it into F4 and 420mm but good for my needs.

Anyone used 120-300 with a x2 who can offer thoughts?

It depends on what you'll be using it for.

I have only ever used mine for Motorsport. Frankly it doesn't have a hope in hell of tracking a fast-moving target, however with a bit of pre-focussing i've got some very nice shots out of mine.

From a quick look at your gallery it seems to be mostly football. If that's your intended use i'd say you may well be disappointed as the subject movement will be too random. It's generally pretty easy to predict where a car will be on a track so i can compensate for the lack of AF speed.

Whether the 1DMK2 will make any difference is for others to comment on, as i only have a 20D.

This is an example @ 600mm which i find is the weakest spot...

:D

There are plenty of situations where it won't work. It also produces its fair share of poor shots.

It's a compromise but on the whole mine does the job i need it to :)

Geoff, have you got any shots wide open (at F5.6) with the 2x?

Darren

Sigma, non DG.

Well, I'm very glad to hear that - it's the one I am planning to buy. I am happy with the Sigma 1.4x - it has performed well on my 100-300 and 200L.

Thanks,

Tony

It depends on what you'll be using it for.

I dont even use the 1.4 for football... :)

Its for the cricket season.. Will be pointing at one spot for most of the time... nothing to fast in cricket (unless dodging the ball)

From your impressive stuff I would say it would do nicely for the cricket season.. would you agree?

PS
Just looked.. that car your pointing to.. F13 at 600mm .. VERY NICE :)

I can't see why it shouldn't work for you. If your subject is anything like the current England team, rapid movement won't be an issue :D

My Ice hockey on website.. shot with sigma 70-200 because the 120-300 is in japan with definition problems and will hopefully be back and sorted this week :)

Yes, sorry I meant the Hockey shots on your webpage.

Again is your 120-300 DG or non DG lens type?

Thanks,
Ross

That actually makes me happy.

I really am impressed with alot of the reviews and the actual shots people have been taking with it. Now I think your photos might just put me over the top in getting one.

The other thing about it is that I can pick a used one up around $1500-2000 and I might use the money I was going to spend on a Canon 300mm prime to get the 1D MKII now instead of in the spring.
