This is my first try at something even remotely like this. I am going to reshoot it with some lighting from the front, but I thought this came out reasonably well. I also want to use a candle that doesn't bleed. :(

I think it's really great, may be you should put not candle in front but a piece of white paper just to light the nearer part of trumphet. Because I personally love the composition as it is! Great Work!

I didn't mean that I would put the candle in the front, but that I want to shine some light nearer the front. I think your idea about a piece of white paper will do exactly what I am looking for. Thanks!

I actually like the melted wax. Adds to the feel. Like they've been practicing all night.

These were both taken with a Powershot S2 IS at f/3.5. I took a ridiculous number of exposures on both of them and merged them to HDR in Photomatix. I tried to make it look more natural than most HDRs look, so hopefully no one said, "AHA! HDR"
I got a few comments on photo.net that said I should try to keep the flame from being overexposed. I am going to go back to the original files and see what I can do with the tone mapping to make this happen.
