The church where my parents go to asked me to take images at the Christmas play. I think I did pretty well... I used a 300D and Canon 85 1.8. Settings were ISO at 800 and on AV. Most shots were at F 2.3...

Don't you just love this lens...

Great background bokeh and sharp as a tack...

Great job Ryan...

I do indeed love this lens! LOL! I could easily be a rep for it. Cause I believe in it so much. I think next will be a 135 L, but I believe it us time to upgrade bodies... I am saving for a 5D.

The primes rule in low light and the "L"'s rule in very high resolution...from what I see, with my lenses...The 5D has a bigger sensor but I hear it's a slower shooter? I'm not keen on that info, but I know Dwight MCann just ordered one for his specific needs...there has been talk around his most recent threads regarding it...

When you get a chance Ryan, check out my Sha Na Na Christmas posting...On several shots in both threads, I shot cross stage with the 85mm and on one pic, I enlarged the photos to check the resolution, and to check on "possible blow out with bright white light", it's all in the thread...John

Thanks John, I will check it out. Well, 5D will seem much quicker to me since I shoot with a 300D. The buffer on 300D is slow!

Those look good. I just shot some for our church youth tonight. I was using 50 1.4 and shooting at iso1600, 1/100 or so and f2.0 - 2.2. Love the lighting at church. :D

I feel ya, how did your images turn out? I like my 50 1.4 too, but does not seem to have enough reach for the type of shooting I like to do. 1600 ISO! Wow! 1600 on my camera is scary stuff!

I really don't use the 50 too often but it seemed like the right choice for this cramped dark space (sounds like a closet doesn't it?:D). I'd hoped to use 17-55 f2.8 for flexbility in framing, but just a little too much movement for the shutter speeds I'd have had to use.

As for the quality at 1600, not too bad. Our progrom was a little slow moving so I couldn't decide whether to post the pictures here or in the People section. :D So I figured I wouldn't post them. But I put a couple on-line so you could check out how 1600 worked with the church lighting. I didn't want to post pictures in your thread so I put them here (http://photos.1branson.com/v/ChurchChristmasProgram/).

Looks like 85 would have been to long for your position (from the pictures you posted). 1600 looks great on your camera! Did you run NoiseNinja or something on them? Cute images BTW.

85 would have definately been too long. Probably the only time I've ever been on the front row in church. ;) I've been using the ISOx Pro action from FM. I did run these through on a light setting. For comparison, here's one (http://photos.1branson.com/v/ChurchChristmasProgram/IMG_6781_noPP.jpg.html) of them straight from raw, no PP other than resizing.

One thing I've learned, the higher the ISO the less forgiving when it comes the the PP. As long as I can fill the frame and get the exposure right on, I've had no problems. I did have a few from last night where a major crop would really benefit composition, but then the noise starts to factor in. Oh well, gives me something to practice on in PS.

Yeah, you camera is showing a lot less noise than mine. 800 is the limit for mine. Your 1600 looks between my 800 and 400.

Some closer cropping, and a bit more 'energy' in the images would have been nice.
Quite decent otherwise.

Thanks Rene! Yeah, I think this is all the energy I can get from these guys. Just some of the youth at the church. No paid actors or actresses. I agree on the crops.
