Hey everyone, I just recieved my first portfolio book, it's an 11x14 in portrait form which I understand to be the industry standard for photographers in the fashion/glamour business. It's the black Ice Nine series from Lost Luggage:

Anyways, what I am wondering as I get prints ready is should the prints be done in glossy or matte? Almost everything I have printed in the past for my own personal use has been in matte form as I am not a huge fan of the glare from glossy photos, but I read somewhere that glossy is more inustry standard for submitting to agencies and the like.

If anyone with experience in the field could answer this for me that would be great. Thanks in advance.

Glossy tends to look better.

And doing some quick research I finally found a reasonable explaination for the 9x12 or 11x14 portfolio books. That is the size at which it is large enough to take a full page magazine spread without folding.

I had wondered this because usually I keep hearing that it really does not matter much as long as they are at least 8x10 in size and "letter" size prints are common these days for starting out. Most models I work with this day want digital pictures that can be printed if needed. The only thing that tends to be actually standardized is Comp cards at 5x7" in size.

But Glossy is preferred because of percieved sharpness over matte.

Just what I have found out and experience,

Nate in fashion/glamour glossy is the norm skin tones and sharpness are key and glossy or semi-gloss is the way to go, matte tends to look a little softer, more polished on high end skin tones which depending on your style could work - but as a general rule its gloss. that said you should always remember that you know your work best and your style that you are trying to convey to clients etc so go with what you feel is best for you.
