I have a Mac G4 1Ghz single processor and 768 RAM. It seems to take an extraordinate amount of time to download and work with RAW images. Approx 40 sec. to download 1 full size RAW from the camera. Another 20 sec. to open the image, approx 20 sec. for each adjustment and another 30 sec. to convert. That is around 3 and a half minutes per image if you change all the parameters. I know my system isn't set up for "blazing speed", but this seems like a lot of time per image. Am I asking to much of my machine, or not getting enough from it?

First of all, how are the images coming to the computer?
(A) via card reader
(B) directly from the camera via USB

If your answer is (B), then there is part of your problem.

I use a card reader and transfer the images to the hard disk (ten per minute). Then for the conversion from RAW to 48-bit TIF, it is four per minute. This is on a 2.5GHz XP machine.

Thanks for the reply. Images are coming from (B) the camera. I will have to invest in a card reader. I realize that RAW has it's drawbacks, but hope to streamline as much as possible. I was reading on another post that the write speed of the CF is a determining factor as well. Anyways, thanks Bob

Directly from the camera is the cheapest way to do it, and also the slowest.

A card reader and adapter in the computer for Firewire is fast. USB2.0 is also fast.

My card reader is USB1.1, so it is not as fast, but good enough for government work.

In a CF card, you have write speed and read speed. Write speed is when the camera is writing image data to the card. Read speed is when you are transferring that data to the computer. For our Canon cameras, these are not big factors, but they are measurable.
