hi!

I have a boarding trip coming up on the 5th and I am packing along my XTi, kit lens and 50mm F/1.4 all in my Dakine Ridge & camerablock

what else is a good idea to bring along?

-ziplock for the camera and lenses
-filters? polarizer? grad ND? (will be shooting action and landscape)

thanks!

and happy holidays all!

Boarding? so like skiing snow boarding etc?

Think a CP and ND would be good, lots of bright white snow to compete with..

You can also use your CP as a ND. When I go skiing, I just pretty much leave it on all the time. The CP is worth about 1.5 to 2 stops ND at its max.

You might want a wider and a longer lens. I like a 24-105 if I use a single lens - it is sort of wide on a crop and long enough. It is also compact enough to make carrying it easy.

I put my camera in one of the zing (made by Tiffen) neoprene wrap cases when I put it in the backpack. A nice compromise between bulk and protection. Also able to shoot fast with it and then move on.

Depending on how cold, an extra battery carried in an interior pocket is a good idea.

If you don't already know how to do it, learn to use fill in flash. You will need it with the bright white snow as a background (in many instances).

thanks for the tips John.

I will be picking up a polarizer on Boxing day.

As for wide, I will be using my kit lens as I do not have another at the moment.

Ah - I see from your sig. Well, I'd take both then.

When you get a polarizer, make sure that it is multireflective coated (MRC). makes a huge difference. They are more expensive, but it is necessary. See:

UV and CP Filter tests (http://www.kenandchristine.com/gallery/1054387/1)

With such strong lighting, as you find in the mountains, it's really important especially since a CP is most effective at 90 degrees to the sun (good conditions for flare).

Which area are you going to?

I'm going to Panorama (http://www.panoramamountainvillage.com/)

I will make sure I get the MRC. thanks for the heads up.
