Hey everybody, sorry if this a repost of stuff but I'm a newbie to the forums.

I am going to purchase a DSLR within the next few months, probably a 10D, depending on availability and stuff....still maybe a 300D...but I'm pushing for the 10D. I have a few questions that maybe a few of yall could help me out with.

1. Which DSLR would you recommend to me? I've been shooting on an EOS elan IIe and canonet g-III QL17....havent been able to switch to digital until recently. I'm thinking of a 10D, but is Canon planning on releasing any new successors to it anytime soon? or will there be a pricedrop in the 10D?

2. What is a good all purpose lens I should invest in? I currently have a sigma 28-200 thats being sent in for a chip upgrade or something. I'm planning on going to europe after graduation.... any other suggestions for good glass?

thanks in advance. I'll prob have more questions to bug yall with later on.

Hi,

I was in the same position to yourself, not too long ago.

Simple answer ...

I would recommend the 300D.

Reasons: You mentioned, like I initially did, that you were worried about an upgrade/price-change to the 10D ...

Therefore why not by the 300D now and upgrade later.

Personally (mostly from reading posts on here) I don't think the 10D will be replaced until late this year, and maybe even not made available to Christmas/New Year.

So either get the 10D, enjoy it and maybe/maybe not upgrade it later.

If really worried about changes, get the 300D as that is very unlikely to be replaced in the not-so distant future as it is selling like hot-cakes!

Lenses I will leave to those with more experience/knowledge than myself.

Goodluck

Here are some of my posts I made which might be of interest.

Actually from what I have been reading, I anticipate that Canon will do a serious upgrade to the 10D and the price will go back up closer to $2,000. Probably an MAP of $1995, but with many, many new features and enhancements.

Not that I'm in the know or anything. Actually no one that does business with Canon talks. They are very good about keeping future product specs under reigns.

There will be a new 10D in October.

Considering Best Buy's return policy, people are buying the 10D from them, purchasing the extended warranty, and then when the 10D MKII comes out, pplanning to return it as a defective camera with dust spots on the sensor and get a full refund credit towards the purchase of the MKII.

Seems that's what several people here are planning to do. Can't say if that's right, or honest but their policy is pretty straight forward. No questions exchange policy.

MIke, I am very new to DSLR also and just went through what you are going through. I recommend reading every post you can. !!! I probably would have bought a 300D before I came here but there were none to be had. After reading many post I decided on the 10D. Every camera out there will be replaced sooner or later. Look at any of them. The main thing is to get all you need and not have to do it again in 1 year. Cameras don't increase in value!.. I have not regreted the extra I spent on the 10d.

RFM,

Do BHP have such a return policy?

So let me get this straight ... because when they take their camera back the 10D will have been (presumably) discontinued, therefore they can choose to get a replacement/credit.

If they took the camera back before the 10D had been replaced, would they still be given the option of taking credit ... or would they have no choice and have to take a 10D replacement??

Finally ... this so called 'dust' ... do the people at Best Buy not check to see if there is an issue ... or is at a returns/no questions asked policy?

B&H has no such policy. I doubt you will find a real camera store with that policy. Be aware that you have to buy BB's extended warranty.

There was a member who is in the process of returning their Drebel for dust. That's BB's policy when you buy that extended warranty. Full exchange for ANY defect.

Yeah but again ... this "defect" ... does it have to be proven, or is it taken by word?

Dunno. Toss a hairball in the camera and take it in! ;)

Sure ... that will do it!

I just had a check of the BB site, and couldn't find anything of an Extended Warranty ... does it have a different/special name?

Further,

Reading at the BB site I found the following:

No Lemon Policy

So where are people getting the idea that you can get the credit/replacement immediately ... without the replacement requiring 3 repairs?!?!?

I bought the extended warranty with the 10D at BB nearly a year ago now..

These are the details.

Full repair or replacement for any reason for the duration of the warranty.

If the Camera can not be repaired or replaced with the like model,. replacement with newer equivelent or full original opurchase price applied as credit towards a new model.

Now,. the DRebel dust thing.. it is odd because my plan certainly leaves repair as an option. It sounds like the BB where the Drebel is being brought in for dust is just being too lazy to try and repair? or else there is a policy of "carry out replacement" that is not written into my particular service plan?

Anyway,. when I bought the 10D,.. knowing how things had happened with the D30-D60-10D I felt it was a rather conforting plan to have..

On the other hand,. with the Drebel in BB... if the 10D is repelaced,. it may very well be that Best Buy will never again carry a model of the 10D's claibre,. all that they may be able to offer is the Drebel class cameras...

So it is by no means any guarantee of an upgrade.
