This is my first go at still life (is that what you call it?) and taking pictures of flames. I set up some candles on a plate and played around with them. Has anyone got any tips on how to improve the image?

Shallower depth of field may make the picture more interesting so it can be viewed in a way that our eyes do not see those candles.

So you mean slightly out of focus? I forgot to mention it was taken withe a Powershot A95. So would manually focusing it to be slightly blurred work?

Do NOT Narrow your depth .. increase it ! I love it and what impresses me is that the flames have detail.

And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The entire image was created about the candles. To make them secondary would be counterproductive. If the maker had not captured the image so that detail was kept in the flames I could see your suggestion but ... there is plenty of detail in them.
