Never heard of this issue before. I've had intermittent problems with my 20D, but it never told me it was too busy.
What do you mean by "get pics off"?
Are you pressing the PLAY button, or are you connecting the camera to a computer via the USB port? or what?

just turning the camera on. getting the canon camera window...clicking on download photos or, select photos to download and its telling me the camera is busy and that I must have the lcd on. It is connected via usb.

I don't believe that you use Camera Window to transfer images from your 20D to your computer. Take a look in the software manual that came with the camera, it gives step by step instructions.

simple fix it to get a card reader. quicker, and does not run the risk of batteries dieing during transfere.

Just go into Windows Explorer and look for the camera. Select the proper subdirectory and copy/move to your heart's content.
I believe the camera window is only used if you take a picture with the camera while connected to USB. Then the camera downloads the pic to the camera window and displays it on your computer.
Try taking a picture with the camera while in the camera window. See what happens.

Eck sorry Im a little confused... I just upgraded from the 300d...I used to switch it on, the canon camera would appear and it would give me two options:download photos or select downloaded photos...Id pick one and just start to download photos...It is giving me the same options for the 20d and I used the software that it came with..
I understand that a card reader would eleviate the problem, but I would like to know why I can't get them to download off the camera this way. I tried using the ptp communication and it worked..using windows xp...but the "normal" communication is still not working.

Do you have EOS Viewer Utility installed? If you do, just follow the instructions in the Software Manual.
